Got my new mold for 450

Postby Odfairfaxsub » Fri Mar 30, 2018 3:28 pm

Well decided against loading the 350 gr and bought a proper mold. Accurate mold 45-280. Has a narrow nose and wide drive bands. This one is gas checked too. So o bought some copper gator checks and coated them 2x w used a alloy of 50-50 wheel weight and range scrap/pure mix and also added 2% tin

H110 34gr, 35 gr, 36gr and 37 gr.

Oh I forgot I bought some mag rifle primers and will be using those

Today I shot them. I did two diff powders (h110 and imr 4198) w cci mag primers

34.5 gr h110 did a inch at 60 yards

Anything heavier in h110 started to spread more and more as the charge got heavier so I’ll try to down load it 2 gr and re work it back up

38.0 gr imr 4198 1 1/2 in group 60 yards
39.0 gr imr 4198 1 1/4 in group 60 yards
40.0 gr imr 4198 1 inch group 60 yards

The bushmaster has no data from Hodgdon website so I did my own thing developing the load from quick books figuring it would be a good candidate as h4198 is mentioned on their website. H110 loads threw brass about 3-4 feet away and the 4198 through the brass about 5-6 feet away. Use my data at your own risk as being a grown adult male comes w accepting what you consider is a healthy risk and what is a dangerous risk ~ ron swanson lol

There’s no real crimping station on these bullets. What I did was seat the bullet all the way till the final drive band just before the transition to the ogive and applied a taper crimp. The crimp was not overly done but just enough to give it the staying power. Imr 4198 loads appear to be compressed loads or appear to have little to no space left in case. No pressure signs and the recoil from them was better than my h110 loads

Sering you powder coated them, would a guy even need a lube groove?

No lube grooves necessary. I did want a bullet w no lube groove but settled for this ultimately. Shot pretty well for what I wanted it to be. Has similar/like performance as the hornady Black.....cept not 1.30 a piece

Gfla upper ar15. I have a bolt gun just trying to sell that. If it doesn’t sell in the future I’ll blow 350 gr bullets from it
