I'm loading the Speer 300 grain Deep Curl H.P. these are for the 454 Cas. cartridge. They are loaded over 43 grains of Hodgdon H4198. That is a case full and the bullet is seated compressed just to the middle of the cannalure and no crimp. I am shooting these in a Ruger #1 and they clock 1927 FPS at 10 feet from the muzzle. I am getting 3 shot groups measuring 1 inch. I'm using Hornady brass and CCI small rifle primers. There are no signs of pressure and I like this load.

Welcome aboard. Those 10t #1's sure can shoot!!!

I've shot a few of those deep curls few years back in my Bushey over 44gr 1680, very accurate and the ones recovered from dirt bank were very impressive for expansion. I ran out of them and never could find them in stock during the shortage.

Might have to look for them again and try them in my #1.

I believe the Deepcurls are history now. Wish I had kept some of the 300's that I had for experimenting a few years back. Still have some of the 165gr .308 ones. They are Ju-Ju on whitetails!

Hello all
Here are a few photos of one 6pt buck I was able to harvest last fall. The deer was in thick brush along side of the creek in my shooting area. He appeared as he was going to cross the creek ( cant see anything across the creek to thick) so I took a very sharp angling away shot just in front of his left hip with the factory 450 Bushy Hornady 250gr. The bullet angled up front and took out part of the liver, then went into the paunch. He was full of corn and a lot of grass. It would appear as if the paunch acted like a gel block where you see the gasses coming back out of the entrance hole. The hole was huge and covered with grass and corn particles. The bullet kept on going hit lung and lodged in a rib on the far side, he went right down.
The scecond buck, was a very weird 10pt? I was able to take 9 days later, the shot was a double lung broad side and he also went right down.

Here is a pic of a 300 DC shot from my 454 carbine at about 1700 fps. Neck shot 200 ish# whitetail at about 35 yards. IT FAILED TO EXIT the neck! First and only time I have recovered a bullet from this gun/caliber! (Probably 12-15 deer taken.)

regarding the OP question about sierra's 8830s
i emailed sierra about a month ago...and while i was asking about shooting at white tails...the answer from them may shed some light on their offerings for bullets for the 450 bushmaster
(it has been a while from the original post/question...but i did just join the forum...)

i was asking more about white tails...but hopefully the info can be useful

I have a 450 Bushmaster rifle and am looking for a bullet for reloading. I am looking at using it for whitetail deer in Ohio (since they let me shoot at the critters with straight wall rifle cartridges now) and for target as well. Do you have a recommendation for a good bullet for this application?

We offer two bullets that will fit in this cartridge but the #8820 240gr Jacketed Hollow Cavity was built for the 45 Colt and works well at a lot slower velocities than the 450 will generate. If you can slow the muzzle velocity down to 1,700fps or lower, it may work for you. Our #8830 300gr Jacketed Soft Point is built to be a lot tougher using the toughest lead core we put in a bullet. It should be able to handle the velocities easily but it may be overly tough for whitetail without hitting a major bone structure and even then it may not give much expansion if any. Everything else we offer in this diameter is built for the 45 ACP and designed for self-defense as a hollow point design or as a full metal jacket except two. Our #8810 185gr and our #8825 200gr are what we call a Full Profile Jacket and even though they are used in match shooting, our 200gr is possibly my first choice because of the way it is built. The jacket is curled around the edge of the lead nose and protects it on impact. It may not give much expansion in the conventional sense but it should swell enough to cause major damage through vitals on a broadside shot. Thanks for the interest and let me know how it goes for you.

Sorry to bump this from last year, but has anyone gotten any real world conformation as too if this bullet is too hard for whitetail without hitting bone?
