Only the lower half of the lower peninsula falls in the 1.800 case length rule, northern lower and the UP can use about anything.

My pet gun last was a Savage barreled 45 Raptor which drives a 200gr Barnes north of 2900fps. I need to check actual drops one of these days but would have no reservations on a 300yds shot

The entire state of Iowa just this year legalized a list of straight wall case cartridges for deer hunting the 450 bushmaster being one of them. In prior years only muzzleloaders and shotguns were legal in the firearms seasons. Among the list i really think it is a tossup what cartridge you select. good hunting and shooting to all

my main hunting ground is up in the unrestricted zone of michigan - i'm actually only about 9 miles north of said line.

however - here unless you're hunting BIG corn/bean fields rarely will you need to shoot much past about 150 yds and most of the time 100 yds or under. so totally right in the 450's wheelhouse.

that raptor looks like a sweet round, but my ar-10 is just too damn heavy to lug around with the difference in receiver size, so my 450 will do just dandy for anything i'll get to plug at. i wouldnt hesitate to take a 200 yd shot with it as long as i had my drops though.

if i'm up north and need more gusto i've got a 308 and a 30-06 i can go to ez peazy to shoot across our big beanfield :)

Wow, I'm in the next state and didn't know that! All I can say is practice practice practice. While the 450b, with its mortar round trajectory is pretty forgiving, a steady rest, timing your shot and follow through become critical the further out you reach. I recommend any of the FTX bullets for longer shots. Definitely not the Barnes.

I'm curious as to why you wouldn't recommend the Barnes bullets for longer shots?

From my Barnes Experiments and that was the faster 200gr. The 275 would have even a shorter range at which it would expand. The FTX's expand at a much slower velocity = longer range.

This in no way require you to take a 300 yard shot with a cartridge not up to the task... It simply means you need to get closer or watch them walk by. Its hunting not shooting.

I live in a shot gun state myself. (Shotgun on all state and state leased lands) But Rifles are allowed on Private land if enough land is contiguous.

This is my 4th trip to Iowa and yes i have let at least 7 or 8 very good bucks walk due to the distance. I will probably be restricting my shots to 200yd and under.

Once again, folks reporting that my image links in previous post weren't working. So very tired of Google Drive!

I once again re-hosted them on a different site (postimage.org) which I highly recommend.

Whether they are viewable seems to depend upon which browser you re using. Postimage is browser independent.

somebody once posted a email from Barnes where they said 1800fps was min velocity for expansion for those 200gr, which sure looks to be the case with Hoots testing.
