handloading 270gr Keith style SWC for Ruger American Rifle

Accuracy was definitely missing with these bullets. I loaded them up with 15gr trail boss and got a 4 foot pattern at 100yrds. right click and the select view image to see the hollow point.

It seems that there is very little data for the bolt action chamberings. I would like to use my powder coated 270gr Kieth style SWC with and without hollow point. These bullets have the thick driving band on the bottom, so slumping should not be an issue. I have the powders listed and want to come up with a load that's plinking friendly and conservative on powder. Also I can't push these bullets to hard since they are a plain base bullet. The bullet I am using is Image
1. Unique
2. Power pistol
3. H335
4. Imr 4350
5. H414
6. Imr 4831
7. Imr 4320
8. High skor 800x
9. Imr 3031
10. Win 760
11. Accurate no5
12. Accurate 2460
13. Trail boss
14. Accurate 2015 BR
15. H4198
16. Dupont SR 4759
17. Alliant black MZ
18. Hogdon clays

WELCOME .

Check the actual bullet diameters... I'll bet ya that the diameters are small.

OR how hard are ya trying to push them? Lead likes lower pressures. So say under 40 and under 30K is better yet!

Some of those powders can work.

4198 is a good one in the 45/70 should be in the 450. Unique is one that works in all straight walled cases. BUT would be a light bullet loading. TRAIL BOSS is another that literally works in ALL straight walled cases. Load 80-95% case capacity WITH BULLET LOADED... don't compress it. In other words figure out case volume AFTER BULLET LOADED, then load to 80-90% of that.

When I first got my RARR I wanted to shoot light lead too. But found the very same as you.

Bullets where commercial quality hard cast .452. OR SUPPOSEDLY .452.... They ran closer to .450!!

Now I cast my own and size to 454 and I shoot one hole 50 yard groups with most any loading. My favorite is a 295G Lyman mold plain base and powder coated. Im loading with a starting load of 4227. Unsure of vel but assuming about 1700 ish FPS. The gun shoots ragged holes. Feeds perfectly and hits a lil softer then factory. Its NOT a powder puff loading. But seems every time I go to the range its raining so no chrony yet. ZERO leading or fouling with the PC even on this plain base bullet!!

I also bought a LEE 300g WFNGC mold to try. But I find I need to seat the bullet too deeply so I'll use the bullet in my 45 COLT.

Just last Sunday I was shooting a 7/8 full loading of Trail Boss with a Lyman Devastator mold HP bullet sized .454 into touching holes @ 50 yards. My buddies 8yr old was shooting ALMOST that good himself!! Just to show how mild it was shooting.

BINGO!

Sorry man... its a unappealing find for sure.

Do you powder coat? That will pretty easily add .002-.003. (Gotta clean lube off first.)

Good looking bullet! I did not see pic when I replied last.

I too size after coating. But a thin powder coat, measured after, can be treated like "AS CAST" bullets...

I bought a quantity of Lyman Desistators from a fella out west. (I don't have that mold) they came in sized and like we both now found the sizer was not sizing to marked diameter. So I had about 500 bullets, beautifully cast bullets that where too small... Powder coating and a proper size left me with shoot able and accurate bullets.

Lee makes a 454 push thru and they are cheap... Mine is real close to 454 most alloys I use come out 453.5 dia.

Loaded up some 454 diameter ones, this time I needed to load them a lot shorter than the first time. I suspect that the undersized bullet was letting them slide to far into to the bore and making them long. This time they needed to be crimped on the first driving band in order for the bolt to close.

I Like the NOE push through sizers they are really accurate and take up a lot less room than the Lee.
