Favorite plinking loads

What are y'all's favorite plinking loads for the BM? I'm looking for something relatively light and cheap that will still work the AR action.

Not the absolute cheapest but a pleasure to shoot: 200gr Hornady FTX over 36gr Lil Gun, seated to yield a COL of 2.15 and taper crimped down into the cannelure. A couple more grains of Lil Gun and you have an effective whitetail load to boot.

230 grain HAP. I have an unfinished range report on them somewhere on this forum. I shoot them over SW Heavy Pistol, but LilGun works and is what most people here prefer. Here's a 5 shot group I shot today at 100 yards.

I cast my own 295G PB LYMAN lead bullets then powder coat them.









I load them on top of lighter charges of 4227 for about 14-1500fps.

Here is average accuracy @ 100.



Not as good as jacketed, but plenty fun and accurate for tin cans, clay pigeons and rocks.

Seriously, how well does the powder coat stick to the bullets? Any issues with it getting in the gas system or fouling up the rifling?

One of the tests done to be sure its wont come off is to pound the bullet into a square... ANY flaking and you did it wrong.

THEN pound it into a coin. Again any flaking or peeling and you need to adjust temp and cook times.

This coating will not come off, even mangled recovered bullets will be green on most of the remaining lead.

I don't shoot suppressed, but many say it is acceptable for suppressed once powder coated properly.

Are you shooting these through a bolt gun or gas gun. I've read hereabouts that the gas port on auto's will wreak havoc with plain based cast bullets, or even gas-checked if the check is not tall enough. BTW, nice looking boolits. I PC too.

If you're using an auto, are you running into any problems with the gas system fouling?

These are BOLT loads I do not yet have a 450 AR upper.

BUT, I would not worry about firing them in one! I shoot a ton of them thru my 300 AAC AR's



You can see that sizing only polishes the powder coating on these bullets. (Sized last after PC and with the GC step.

Bolt gun just now.

I could agree if higher pressure and conventional lubed bullet. GC helps a lot. The PC IS NOT a replacement for a GC for sure. But it don't hurt!
