Does anyone know how the hornady 250gr ftx differs from the sst 250gr bullet ? They both seem to have the same profile or shape.

the SST's were the original ML bullets I believe. They had a hard plastic tip where as the FTX has the spongy tip. I use to have some cut aways of both, construction was the same as far as jacket thickness.

According to Hornady...the FTX will achieve proper expansion down to 900 fps and the SST will achieve proper expansion down to 1300 fps . What the construction differences are, I have no idea, but there must be something different about the 2. This was the information I was given when I emailed Hornady about the 2 different bullets.

Don't forget the YELLOW tipped, shock waves and BLUE Tipped BONDED core bullets to really muck up the waters!! :) :o

Al post that pic of the bullets halved, the jackets all seem identical. I know the tips are different as the FTX is soft and rubbery and SST hard plastic... Then the colors of the tips... I have Red, Yellow, Grey and the Bonded BLUES....

L-R 250gr FTX, 250gr Shock Wave, 300gr Bonded Shockwave, 275gr Parker Ballistic Extreme, 325gr .458 FTX.

These were from my smokeless ML days, the Parker is a very accurate bullet from the closed breech 450's, but you can't drive them much past 2300fps or they will leave a little ring of jacket in the chamber. I think their match hunter series have a thicker jacket and might hold up better. Hoot has resized that .458 with decent results if I recall right, might be a good option for those who want a bit more weight.

pic of the jacket ring. I've had this happen in both the 450B and 45 Raptor bolt guns. Only thing I can think of is the bullet obutrates at the base leaving the chamber mouth and then gets sheared off. I've had the same thing happen with my 358aimm using 180gr XTP's above 2200fps which also have a thin jacket.

That’s pretty cool looking!
Do the Parkers expand? I remember looking into them, and it sounded like they just relied on the diameter to do the killing.

Sorry, probably a stupid question but was this bullet fired from a 450 Bushmaster at 2600 fps?

smokeless ML, sabotless.

but I'm fairly confident I could tickle 2600fps in my #1 or the 700 and a 275gr Barnes.
