Over crimped?

Postby AR167 » Mon Oct 15, 2018 2:01 pm

Long time shooter of this caliber....First foray into trying to load this caliber. It's been frustrating....
Never could get these 275gr tsx from shifting in the case, even with just finger pressure. I tried the Lee .450 FCD and the Hornady taper die. Neither were effective...

I really don't want to get too deep into modified dies etc, though I have considered sizing a portion of the case smaller with a .454casull die to create more tension. There has to be something I'm missing.

Thanks in advance for any tips, great resource here!

Lee

I measured my loads with that same 275gr Barnes bullet and it reads 0.4765 at the crimp. I have plenty of bullet tension, no movement under recoil and can easily shoot 1 ragged hole at 100yds if I do my part. Something doesn't add up with your results. What dies are you using to resize?

It's a brand new Hornady 4 die set.

That's the ones I use, shouldn't be a problem. What do the bullets measure?

That's a good question, I didn't check that before I started crimping. The bullets I have measure .4505-.4510 depending where you measure them. I went ahead and pulled the bullets from the screwed up loads, I definitely over did the crimp to the point of deforming the bullets where they were seated. Bah, I just don't have a good feel for crimping on this round, yet. I definitely more used to using neck tension vs crimping for .260 rem in an AR-10. Can't believe I just boogered 20 rounds of Barnes bullets.

you might have over crimped to the point of bulging the brass a bit which will give you that loose bullet. Been there before with my 500AIMM.

set your crimp for .473-.474 and you should be good.

You might be able to move your bullet out to a slightly longer COL and taper crimp under your previous crimp as long as the bullet doesn't hit the lands.
It's good to do the thunk test on your reloads especially if you want to try side crimping.
I side crimp and taper crimp to .474 and get lower ES and more velocity without any loss in accuracy.
It's not hard to make a side crimper with the 460 S&W die.

Thanks for the replies. I do have a savage bolt action .450 I could reuse those bullets on, I'll definitely run a different t coal on those anyway.

Is anyone making the modified does for sale? I'm pretty scary with power tools!
