452 speer 250gr deep curl

Postby MiHunter » Sat Dec 22, 2018 9:50 am

Nothing special here just sharing my experience with my first 450bm reloads. Im running the $60 BCA 18" midlength gas 1/24 twist barrel on BCA's website. I plan to run up to 40 grains in halg grain increments when time permits so i will be adding to this. Better groups can be acheived when i get rid of my g.i. trigger.
100yds measured 2.2"
250gr speer deep curl HP
OAL 2.010"
crimped with lee fcd to .473
37.0gr of lil gun.
Avg velocity of 5 shots was 2209fps. Temp was 35 deg.

Next step is increasing by half grain increments until best accuracy is acheived and i might play with OAL. Might also swap lowers to one of my other ones with a better trigger.

After christmas ill get back to it. Im not expecting much with this cheap of a barrel. But i bought it expecting a 3 moa gun. And so far its done that and a touch better.

What is the velocity limit of these bullets? They’re very reasonably priced from what I see.

Not sure of the limit. Theyre made for the 45 colt so my guess is maybe 1200-1300 tops?? I use a 44 mag rifle on deer running 180 grain sierras at 2100fps. Way over the specified limit but they do wonders on whitetail. If im lucky ill let you know how these deep curl do on whitetail here in our late doe season.

How was the velocity spread on those 5 shots pictured? That value is a good indicator of the quality of your crimp, which looks well implemented. Looking forward to your success in the late does season and lots of post mortem pictures. ;)

Spread was 67, SD was 27. Not the best but ive seen worse from some factory ammunitions through the years. Forgot to mention im using remington 7-1/2 primers which ive never built any of my accuracy loads for 223 or 6x45 with. Usually i use br4 or believe it or not sellier and bellot. I might try some different primers for the heck of it.

I will definitely be following this thread! Just bought an 18" BCA upper. Plan on reloading for it. Got 2 MOA @ 100 yards with Hornaday 250FTX Blacks. Could have maybe been tighter. Was using back up iron sights, & a backpack for a bipod. :?

With a backpack for a rest and iron sights, I'd be lucky to hit an 8x10 target sheet anywhere at 100 yds. That's why I judge loads using a high power scope on a BR setup. The idea is to test the loads, not my eyes.

With a NM (tiny) peep and my driving glasses, I'd probably be able to keep them center of mass on the sheet...maybe. ;)

Oh to be young again...
