Does anyone know which of these powders would take up the least space in a 450 case, as in least amount of volume per grain of powder?
Lil Gun, H110, 300 MP, or A1680. If indeed there is any difference.

H110 will be the most dense but they're all within a few percent of one another for the same charge weight. Lil Gun and AA1680 and almost identical, despite having different uses. Not sure what you're chasing but there's not much difference in the big scheme of things.

The Lee reloading manual or powder dipper chart gives volumetric density info.

The Lee manual does not list several recently introduced powders. A more up-to-date list is found at Lee's website, although some of the most recent introductions are missing: https://leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/VMD.pdf.

Lee likes the VMD measurement because multiplying a cartridge's powder charge in grains will produce the volume of the charge in units of cc (cubic centimeters).

I suspect the tabular volumetric densities, VMD, with units of cc/grain, are in fact calculated by Lee from the manufacturers' published metric density values of grams/cc. However, I cannot find a handy listing of those values, either online or in my library.

Using the Lee values, one can calculate approximate densities with units of weight(mass) per unit volume. For the powders of interest here's a table showing the VMD and densities, ranked in ascending density values:
Code: Select all
             VMD      Density
         (cc/grain)  (grams/cc)
         ----------  ----------
Lil'Gun    0.0678      0.956

300-MP     0.0667      0.971

H110       0.0656      0.988

1680       0.0655      0.989
