Anybody tried Super heavies?

Postby Blancs3030 » Wed Feb 27, 2019 6:14 pm

Hello guys, I'm looking at a ruger american 450 Bm and I am curious if any one has sized 458 bullets down to 452. This one particularly http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=42_560&products_id=5362.

If so, or anything like it, is it able to get to 1050 fps? Looking to suppress it first through my Rugged obsidian 45, maybe later to a Lane 458. Anybody shot their bushes through those suppressors, sub or super?

I know, almost bought the rifle yesterday, but wanted to research it first.

I will follow closely this topic. Bullet that heavy would mean that I can legaly shoot moose with sub-sonic here in Finland.

Yeah I would cast that like my other hollow points 40:1 maybe 20:1 since its almost producing 1400 ft-lbs. It's producing more energy than velocity.

Following. I just bought the Lee .459 500 grain mold. I plan on powder coating. I've done all sorts of internet searching and can't find much for starting loads. I plan on using 1680 or Shooters World Blackout. I won't hijack your thread, I'll make my own when I get all set up to shoot.

Quickload doesn't support that bullet but I took the Lee 300gr C452-300, lengthened it to 1.43 while upping the weight to 569gr. I don't know what COL you use but at 2.26, you can stay subsonic up to 21gr of 1680 (86% fill). If you load it for a bolt action (longer COL) you can increase the charge and stay subsonic. Quickload also does not support newer powders like Shooters World Blackout, so no prediction was possible. That's my biggest beef with Quickload. There's at least a dozen newer powders that the author has not kept up with, including Hodghdon CFE Blackout. :|

If you know what COL you will be loading the 1680 to, I can plug it in and see what QL predicts.

Edited to correct mistyped weight and length. Was too early...

Hoot, you are a real resource on this forum. I had done lots of research on what the SOCOM fan boys were using and interpolating a starting point along with my own experience with 1680 and 300 grain bullets. Having a QL prediction that is fairly close to my educated guess makes me feel pretty good. I don't know what I'll load them to yet, but the nose profile makes me think they will be 2.26 for mag length.
