I was wondering about that before if it would be best to PC after gas checking. Lots of things todo before I will get to that point. I have an accuracy problem I haven’t figured out out I have it down to either barrel or scope.

So. I have the opportunity to try this. Unfortunately I don’t think I have the powder that will work with something this heavy. And if Timothy knew that I was fixing to try this, he would ask me why I would want to try to project a bowling ball?
With that in mind anybody have suggestions on what kind of powder I could consider for bullet weights between 325 grains to 500 grains using cast bullets with powder coat and gas checks.
Yes your beloved crazy arsed Sheepdawg has acquired a huge Casting set up. I don’t have everything operational yet, that’s going to happen later this spring. I have to have the shop upgraded specifically for this type of project. And I’m waiting for my income taxes to come back. Once I have the shop set up, I will be casting all kinds of bullets. I’m not too sure about these monsters, but even though I’m not shooting them, I can cast them for others to try.

I'm so happy to read this! This looks like the picture from the Facebook group? I might have to go cast some more bowling balls in celebration.

Seriously though, my 300 grain GC cast bullets love LG, and the heavies like 1680/SWBO. I was just about turned off to LG with the jacketed 300 grainers, but the cast like it better and I happened upon a 8lb jug for $150 and I couldn't say no.

I won't shoot LG without a gas check for the higher temps tho. I'm also pursuing cast loads in 7.62x39 and 350L as well now.

that bullet sure looks almost like its cut for a GC based on the box pic anyway..., however once you size it down it might not end up with one lol

wonder how those driving bands/lube grooves will look after going thru the sizing die - or if you're gonna end up with a nearly smooth profile to play with

Just go back a page. It's the same bullet I tested in the second half of this thread.

I may revisit this again with some different goals. Instead of concentrating on subsonic, I'll look for accuracy. I plan to keep it at 1350 or under since the was what I gathered to be max pressure. Should help the cycling, and I don't think the sound signature will be too different. It's not movie quiet at subsonic anyway.

That said, I did line up and kill 2 hogs with one 500 grain subsonic bullet. Hit the little one first then did a complete end to end in the big one.

I just want to update.
I found a buyer who needed this mould for his 458 Lott so the mould now has a new owner. However. I am now the proud owner of a 230 grain semi wad cutter with a gas check mould and a 201 grain mould and a 300 grain with a gas check mould. I will give you guys an update as things progress. There’s so much more going on here and I don’t even know where to begin.
But if anyone has any experience with the gas checked 300 grain and the gas checked 230 grain, I would love to learn what you guys have accomplished with these.
I know you may be disappointed that I got rid of the 500 grain, but I have my reasons for not wanting to pursue that type of cannon ball out of my 450B rifles. It’s just that after the many conversations about the heavy hitters above 375 grains that I was honored to have with the late Timothy LeGendre, I believe I made the right decision to abandon the project and let the mould go to someone who could really use it.

The 500 is troublesome at best. Honestly, the gas checked 300 grain is where it's at IMHO. Good accuracy, stability, expansion, penetration... Hard to beat. We've already been talking a little on my NOE 454-307 RF thread. Unfortunately I have to move to NJ this summer, so my access to a place to test and shoot is going in the dumps :'(
