Cast 273 gr HP/GC and 245 gr S.P. Hornady

Postby GaCop » Tue Jun 02, 2020 12:20 pm

Just got back from the range testing more of the 273 gr cast HP/GC poly coated bullets and the Hornady 245 gr SP. I tested the cast 273 grain with 11.6, 11.8, 12.0 and 12.2 grains of Unique. Bullets seated to 2.150" in Hornady twice fired brass. Win SR primer. Testing was at 75 yards for this bullet. All charges produced groups under 2". Best two were 11.8 grains (1.135"), 1266 fps and 12.0 (1.661"), 1261 fps. ES in the teens and SD was single digits.

The Hornady 245 grain SP was loaded over IMR 4227. Two loads that shot under two inches at 100 yards was 34.7 grains and 35.2 grains 34.7 yielded 1844 fps and put three into .590". The ES-91, and SD-49, was high so the group is probably a fluke. 35.2 grains (1856 fps) put three into 1.158", ES-69, SD-35. Primers are showing a little bit of flattening like a normal load would. Max charge with the IMR 4227 is 36.6 grains. I'm really pleased with the cast bullet loads. Now to work on my 316 grain Cast gas checked SWCs with poly coating.

I bought a pound of IMR4227 to see if it filled the gap between H110/W296 and AA1680 for 300gr projectiles. Same thing I did with Alliant 300MP. I could not get good groups with IMR4227. The remainder (almost full pound) is sitting in my powder cabinet.

My results using IMR4227 with the 250 gr FTX was so so accuracy wise so I switched to Lil Gun. It was a complete surprise getting pretty good results with 4227 and the Hornady Interlock SP. I'm really happy with the performance of the cast poly coat and Unique. Accuracy, velocity and energy is more than adequate to knock the hell out of hogs. Most hogs shot here at night are in the 50/60 yard range.

I'll do more work with the 316 gr SWC poly coat gas check using Unique. That will be a real hog buster.

Ran the 273 gr HP-GC up to 13.2 grains of Unique. Bottom line, 12.9 grains seems to be the max charge for accuracy in my rifle. it yielded 1355 fps with SD of 6 and ES of 14. Kinetic energy was 1133 ft./lbs. and grouped three into 1.233" at 100 yards. That should put down a hog nicely.

At 100 yds, your velocity will be down around 1050fps. I don't dabble in cast boolits but I have read a lot of accounts in this forum over the years from members who do and a 100yd group of 1.233 is doing pretty good. Sounds like a keeper! Look forward to your hunting results.

100yard energy should be right around 900 ft/lbs then. Plenty of oomph to ruin a hogs night.

Heck yeah! Standard 45 ACP at point blank will ruin their night and its a lot slower.
