200 grain FTX

Postby GaCop » Sun Jun 07, 2020 4:05 am

Picked up a box of the 200 grain FTX to try. Went with H-110 powder and will see how they shoot today. No load data for the 200 grain in the Hornady manual so using 250 FTX data.

The 200 FTX does its best with a faster powder like Lil Gun. I've even used Alliant 2400 with them.

Good to know, thanks Hoot. Performance with the H-110 was nothing to brag about and 296 not much better. How was velocity with the 2400

I didn't take it very far as the pressure stacked up suddenly compared to Lil Gun. Its been 10 years but IIRC, i stopped when I got up to ~2200 fps. It just didn't feel stable. No case sooting however due to the rapid rise in pressure. I would be careful about working up loads using 2400 when the temps are mild, if I knew I would be using it once it got hot out. Up here, this time of the year, it can be 72 one day and 95 two days later. That happened last week. Luckily we average around 80 tops this time of the year. Makes the brutal winters worthwhile. ;)

Getting into the 90s here already. July/August are our worst months with temps in the high 90s to low 100s. Humidity really high too.
