Speer 350 grain SP and 400 gr SP Resized from .458 to .452

Postby GaCop » Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:43 am

Got in the Lee bullet sizer kit for .452" and ordered a separate .454" Lee die. Resizing cast 405 grain was easy. I noticed that I still have some of the Hornady (NOT SPEER) jacketed 350 grain SP pills and 400 grain SP Speer bullets so tried those in the bullet sizers and they came out great. I lightly lubed the bullets before running them through the die. Bullets look good after their trip through two sizers, no distortion seen. Going to load up some of the 350 grain to try out Friday when I find some load data. I'm thinking along the lines of data for the 45-70 trapdoor carbine should be safe in the Bushmaster, something along those lines. IMR4198 comes to mind. 1680 would work but around here, that's made from "unobtanium".

No, my bad. Just checked and they're Hornady Interlocks.

I'm going to try the 350 grain jacketed with Lil Gun and a cast gas checked 350 grain wide flat nose with RL-7. Hitting the range Friday.

I was looking at my Speer manual in the 45-70 section (for modern lever actions) and think I can safely use some of that data and the Speer 400 grain JFN in my bolt action safely. Reloader 10 looks pretty good along with IMR 3031.

if you have any... give a look at 1680, shooters world blackout or shooters world socom for them heavies.

those should give you good velocity & reasonable pressure for those bigger pills. hth

You'd be better served pushing those resized, jacketed 350's with AA1680. It did a great job on the resized, jacketed 325's i tried once. Lil Gun is a Lil Fast for 350's. ;)

I'd love to try A1680 but around here it's made from "Unobtanium". For some odd reason, shops around here just don't carry the Accurate powders Like they do Hodgdon and IMR.

Still haven't loaded up any of the resized Speer 400 grain SPs.
