Reloading the 300 XTP Mag Ruger Ranch

Postby Moore77 » Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:40 am

Need some help. Going to load up some Hornady 300 gr XTP mags for my Ruger Ranch. I have a short range thick area I want to hunt. I think Hornady calls out a 2.065 COAL and 32.2 r of Lil Gun max. I'll start a little lower of course and work up. Anyone have any other recipes ? I set my other bullets at 2.26 . I want to stay safe but achieve a accurate load. Thanks

How did the Hornady 300 gr XTP mags with Lil Gun workout for you?

years ago in my 16" Bushey upper, I settled on a over book load of 1680 and a 300gr XTP mag. This upper shoots everything good, but shoots that load GREAT !!

A few years back, one of the commercial members reported excellent results using W296 (AKA H110) with the 300 XTP Mags but I forget who it was. I could have swore that he worked up to 40gr. Figure on starting around 34gr and working up in 1 gr increments. My experience with them in my 1:24 twist barrel was the faster I could get them to safely go, the more the groups tightened up.

Check to make sure that the bullet is not into the lands as that can cause increased pressure. In my barrel, an assumed safe COL of 2.26 wound up hard into my lands. I had to reduce it to ~2.20 for a .020 jump.

Remember, max loads worked up during the cool part of the season can turn catastrophic in the heat of summer with ball powders.

Sorry but I haven't been able to go to the range and test the 300 XTP Mags yet. We've all been fighting bronchitis and colds. At least it's not the Rona. They sure look pretty I'll post as soon as I can.
