Thanks!

I was able to get some more range time in today. Played with the Hornady 395 sub-x over the chrono and tweaked the powder a little more. I worked up to and settled on a 12.2 gn charge of unique which holds a tight velocity spread right at 1065 fps. Consistent 2-1/2”, 100 yard groups fired off a bipod and only using a 4x scope, so I’m more than satisfied with that for the weapons intended purpose. Maybe after deer season here in PA, I’ll put some more magnification on top and see what the potential is.

Doubt few could duplicate that with 4x or higher off a bipod, very impressive. :D

Thanks. My boys and I shoot a lot so believe my when I say it took years to be a half descent shot! The targets that I use have a red diamonds so it makes for bracketing the crosshairs somewhat easier on those low power optics and we like to shoot those targets with iron sights too so any zoom is definitely welcomed.

Thats a l-o-n-g shot sub-sonic....on game animals I prefer larger caliber for a more human harvest....

Yes, it is. There's a very big difference in hunting range (humane killing distance) between subs and supers. For me, my max distance would be 130 yards or so on a game animal. There is a such a thing as too low of a velocity for sub's ; ) FYI: I'm using a 4x shotgun scope with a diamond reticle. Top of the diamond is zero at 60-65 yards. Center cross hair is good at 100 and the bottom of the diamond is roughly 130 yards. It makes for a real fast sight picture (hold).

As I was finishing up my range session, I had two shots left in my ammo box. I decided to take a crack out to 300 yards (swinging steel target) with the 395's at 1065 fps. It'll humble you if you've never tried it. With my oldest on the spotting scope, I held roughly eight feet high and about one foot to left (wind hold). My first shot was directly under the steel about a foot or so. I quickly chambered the second round and thought I knew right where to hold to connect but to my surprise the wind let up and I missed the call hitting left a couple inches but my elevation was right on. It still put a smile on my face : ) You should see the vapor trail these big ole buggers put off as they come down from the heavens HA HA HA

If you plan on hunting deer with that you might want to line up a few water jugs @ distance to check expansion and penetration. There is a big difference between putting down an animal and merely putting a hole in one.

These 395 gn Sub-X bullets are designed for subsonic hunting. Hornady states that these show reliable expansion down to 900 fps which is roughly 170-175 yards with my JBM ballistics calculations. To be honest, I will not push them that far. My best hunting shots are 99.9% within 100 yards. in fact, my last three or four deer have all been within 50 yards. ; ) I'm very aware of terminal performance. I have a buddy with ballistics gel I want to give these a run to see proof.

Wondering how well the factory Hornady subsonic ammo performs on deer as far as pass through, no pass through, organ damage etc...
25 yards
50 yards
75 yards
100 yards

You get the picture.

thanks

I'll let you know (if I'm fortunate enough to take an animal this season) but I've read and seen a few reports that they are excellent on hogs. I'm hoping the same is true on the softer hide of a whitetail.
