Large Primer 450 BM Hornady Brass

Postby drayks+ » Fri Oct 07, 2022 8:21 am

Ran across my first LARGE primer 450 BM brass as a local range pickup. How unusual is this and is there a trend toward LP from SP or the other way around? drayks

What's the headstamp? Hornady or whom? Very interesting development. I never thought the cartridge suffered from lackluster ignition using Rem 7 1/2 or CCI 450.

Hoot, I totally forgot to list headstamp info. HORNADY across the top 450 BUSHMASTER across the bottom. I was prepping my brass for cleaning/loading and noticed that the ONE piece of brass I found at the range had LARGE PRIMER that I had manually deprimed with LEE punch and it wobbled around when I went to clean primer recess with Carbide reamer. drayks

I never understood why 450 BM always used a small rifle primer....only one primer 7 1/2 really have enough power to get a full charge of some powders going when it gets below zero....

Wondering if someone may have experimented with reaming small pocket for large primers

I'm sitting here looking at a normal SP HORNADY and this LP HORNADY and I suppose someone could have machined the pocket hole larger, but it looks factory to me. Just trying to find out if some of the FIRST brass by Hornady could have been LP or if someone else has seen this yet. I understand that SAAMI does not specify what size primer has to be in a design such as the SP 45 AUTO or the SP .308 Brass for long range cases. drayks

I've never thought about converting SR to LR until reading this post....most brass when its old and ready to be retired one of the first reasons is a enlarged loose fitting primer pocket...I'll need to look at enlarging the primer pocket on 450 BM brass !

Need to look and see if I have the proper size end mill to open up to LR primers ? Or make one !

I was always gonna try it, just to see if there was any difference.

But when I made the move from the floor to the office, I lost my machining perks :(
