Bullets for relaoding the 450 ??

Postby randyf » Mon Nov 23, 2009 3:10 pm

What bullets should I buy to reload the 450 Bushmaster.....I have about 10 different ones pick out from .451, .452 and .458 ( will resize) from 225gr to 350 gr.
I need to cut back my selection.
I want a cheaper - light bullet for plinking, mid range a something heavy.
Will the lighter pistol bullets disintegrate on impact of something and the heavey rifle bullets punch right thru with no expansion?

What seems to be working best?

for plinking, that would give you similar weight to the commercial ammo, would be to use the Hornady 250 gr XTP - It will probably come apart on deer size game but anything smaller should be ok - its just not designed for the higher velocities.. Its around $26/100

Also for hunting you could try the Hornady 240gr XTP-Mag - it would hold together better since it is a mag - it runs about the same price as the 250 gr XTP

hope this helps some.. Others will be by shortly to add on im sure

Currently, my vote for general purpose would go to the 240 gr. Hornady. Accurate, correct diameter, built tough and not out of line -- price wise.

I've had good accuracy loading the Sierra 250 grain JHP handgun hunting bullets, around an inch @ 100 yards. They do shoot to a slightly different point of aim than the FXTs, but in the 250 packs they're considerably cheaper. I paid a little under .10/each at the Syracuse gun show.

The 240 gr XTP is the same bullet used in Hornady's 454 load correct?

Sure would be nice to be able to load the same bullet for 2 different guns.

Are there any cheaper alternatives for a plinking round? Wasn't someone loading a 230 gr FMJ for plinking? Will they work?

has anyone looked at the hornady website lately? new ftx pt # 45218 for a long colt. its 225 grain, has two cannelures it looks like but it is jus a drawing. should be pretty good at suggested retail of 35.00 per 100. just wonder if the cannelure will hurt accuracy more or help bullet crimp more. any ideas?

I've had very good luck with 230 gr FMJs and 38 grs of LilGun. Check out "Your best plinking load" on the second page.

WSR. Why do you ask? Is there something better?

Why do I use that particular primer? Because that's what I have!

I have a limited supply of WSR left. From what suppliers tell me it will be up to two years before they will be avaiable again -- unless someone who reads this has a source. I purchased some CCi 450's and was going to work up a plinking load with these.
