I tried some 310 grain plain base WFNs out of a Veral Smith mold this weekend. Felix sent me about 100 to play with. They have enough nose that I could seat them out to fill the throat, and still get a good crimp. No joy with either H100 or Lilgun. I had very consitent velocities and single digit SDs, but accuracy was 8" @ 100 yards, and I had a little "gray wash" leading in the barrel beyond the gas port. A couple of gas checked boolits and I was back to a bright shiney bore.
I'm thinking that gas checks are going to be a must. My suspicion is that passing the gas port is messing with the bases of the boolits without checks as I haven't been able to get any of them to shoot. My current thougt is to have another mold made, the same as my 293 grainer, but with an additional 10 grains of front drive band length to fill some of the throat.

How fast can you push a 255 gr Bear Creek moly coated bullet before you start run into problems?

I have not had satisfactory results with the gas checks either. Although -- much better that with plain base. I suspect -- and I could be wrong -- but the height of the gas check is less than the width of the gas port. For a short period of time while traveling past the gas port, the high pressure gas is moving forward and around of the gas check. All gas check bullets that I have recovered did not have the gas check present -- I don't know what that means. Maybe they never stay intact upon impact. I dug the bullets out of the berm at the range. The bases looked good, but on some it looked like gas cutting at the juncture of the gas check crimp and the bullet base. I was hard to tell because of the damage hitting the berm.

Does anyone make a gas check that is higher -- say .125 inches. It would need to be more than the diameter of the gas hole -- which is .10 inches.

Maybe when i get some extra $$$ I'll try it with som ballistics gelatin but who knows where on the wifes list of to do's that will fall. hopefully someone here can beat me to it

I've had some limited success with gas checked boolits sized .453. The 293 grainer I designed will shoot into an inch and a half at 100 yards with several different loads. The best results have been with some Lee .452 310s that a fellow sent me to try. I had one load put the first 3 into 3/4", and then two into 1/4", but in two seperate groups, the aggregate being 1 1/2". That may have been me as I stopped to look after 3 rounds, and then shot the final two. I'm not convinced the it's a gas port issue with the gas checked boolits. My current thinking is that it's more of a long, large throat issue. The Lees weren't touched by a .453 lube die, but they have 70% bearing length, a large meplat and plenty of shank in the nose with the two crimp grooves. If we can agree on a "standard" crimp position, I'll take any stab at a boolit design in the 310 - 315 grain range with more of a big, fat nose like the Lee 310s.

want to try some 280 gr wfngc hard cast boolits in my 450b. Bullets on hand are 280 gr .672 oal, .325 nose to crimp. Looks like 2.01oal will allow the use of the cannalure on the boolit. I may have to seat as deep as 1.93 oal to ensure relible feeding given the .360 meplat on these castings.

anyone care to do a work up on quickload or have experience with similar weight and dimension boolits?

If you can give me the actual weight of the boolits and the powders of interest, I can give you a place to start with Quickload. I wouldn't worry too much about the meplat. I've loaded the 300 grain Lee's out to 2.10 so I could crimp into the lube groove with no problems. The 450 grainers I tried had a pretty big flat point and they fed at 2.160. Didn't shoot for beans, but the fed OK in the Hornady brass.

280 gr +- a grain or so and I'm thinking Lil gun would be a good place to start. A 2.01 would be plenty conservative but it would be interesting to see what the load map would show for a 2.1 oal for comparison. without computers I'd probably start about 31 gr of Lilgun at an oal 2.1.

Quickload estimates using the parameters I use for my 16" rifle-
280 grain RNFP seated to COAL of 2.010 over Lil Gun: max 36.2 grains yielding 2,024 fps @ 39,851 psi
280 grain RNFP seated to COAL of 2.10 over Lil Gun: max 38 grains yielding 2,053 fps @ 39,739 psi

thanks much. I'll start 10% under max and work up. 34 grains of lilgun at col of 2.1. I'll let you know how it goes.
