anyone try 2400 powder with the 450 Bushmaster?

Postby demo_450 » Wed Mar 31, 2010 10:01 pm

Hi Guys,
I have been loading up my 460 S&W and 450 Bushmasters together. I used 37 grains of IMR4227 for both loads with hornady 230 grain FMJ RN's. Shot well in the 450. Used winchester magnum small rifle primers.
Does anyone use 2400 powder? I will try 31 grains of 2400 for this weekend. Just taking the load from the 460 S&W and try it with the 450.
ANYONE HAVE ANY CONCERNS with 2400 with a rifle round..?

demo_450-

Here's a link to a thread from last September describing my experiences with 2400 and 185-grain bullets:
185-gr SWC, Chap. 6: A Brief Trial with 2400

Summarizing, I put up to 47 grains of 2400 behind a 185-grain bullet, getting up to 2850 fps before I judged pressure to be high enough to make me stop tipping the powder bottle. (I'm working with a bolt action, so I don't have to worry about semi-auto operation.)

Because you're planning to use a bullet considerably heavier that I used, and because pressures are likely to build a lot faster with increases in 2400 than with 4227, please be cautious. IMR-4227 is on Hornady's loading sheet, but 2400 is not. We're straying into uncharted territory. Unlike 4227, with 2400 it may not be possible to use the same powder charge in both your 450 and 460. The 450 case has a smidge smaller capacity than the 460 and the 450 runs at lower pressures.

Did you happen to measure velocities with your 4227? There have been few reports of results of 4227 with any bullet weight, and it would be interesting to know what you found.

Is 4227 the slowest powder that might yield acceptable results in the 450?

The Hornady drawing posted on this site shows the 450B case to be 1.700 inches in length.

The 460 S&W is 1.800 inches in length. I'll try to attach a drawing.

I use 2400 and Blue Dot and others of that burn rate area, but only for special applications. they do build pressures faster and caution must be maintained. I do like 4227 and have burned a fair amount. The best results, assuming you aren't needing something special, is to stay in the lil-gun to AA1680 area's. Most of the guys here have had good success with lil-gun, but myself I haven't been able to get away from the 296/H110 powders. Later this summer, when I get a chance to ring out this pressure equipment, I hope to put to bed the powder areas that preform the best, or at least to provide a better knowledge base, so as to be able to make good decisions about our powders..t
