Hey Jim, I also found this topic by Hoot detailing the mod on the 45-70 crimp die.

Whoa - this is like graduate level reloading and definitely not for dummies. Plus, I don't have a machine shop. Guess I will stick to reloading the standard FTX bullets for a while. Great info. This ought to go into the archive somewhere.

It should already be stickied in the reloading for 450 forum towards the top.

Judging from Jim's reply he found it. Jim, it's totally intuitive. If you have a hand drill and a patient helper who can look at what you're doing and guess where you're heading, you don't need a machine shop. Sure a drill press can replace the lack of an assistant, (my situation) but it's the most elaborate piece of equipment you would need. A dremel style rotary tool can be substituted by real good hacksaw work and hand file follow up, but the Dremel makes it a lot less challenge. Read the instructions to the end and take inventory of what you have and what you need. Ask some of the folks who've gone in cold and did it. They'll testify.

They may just do a better job of paper punching a hole through that plate. Depends upon their jacket thickness compared to the MagTechs and the ductility of the plate.

I just measured the bearing surface of the Mag Techs FMJ RN vs the Hornady FMJ FP and the Hornady does have more bearing surface for the lands to engage. 0.021" more.
Flat point has about 0.331" bearing surface and the Mag Tech only has 0.310".
Not really enough to cause concern but might help accuracy just a tiny bit. But in the long run, should perform just fine. I think I am going to back off to 44.5 grains and load these rascals and run them through the Chrony. I might save one for the steel plate just for the cause.
