Hornady 300 XTP Mag for the 450?

Postby lawle102 » Tue Aug 10, 2010 1:38 pm

Has anyone tried loading the Hornady 300 XTP Mag for the 450 yet? I am not looking for break neck speeds but I am interested in finding something heavier that could hit around the 2000 FPS range. Any help is much appreciated.

I haven't, but I wanted to Welcome you to the forum. Image

At ~2,660 ft/lbs, it's well within the stress tolerance of the platform.

Well hoot, looks like I will be experimenting then since I'm going to pick up 100 of them today. What do you think will be a safe starting charge? I think somewhere around 28 Grains of Lil gun to get me rolling then, check my chrony and cases to get a feel for it. Again, any input would be nice.

One thing you'll learn about this forum after a while is that folks hand out posts like they're marked currency. It's incredibly slow here. While you can wait for someone to reply like Siringo, 28 grains of Lil Gun sounds like the perfect starting point to me. My intended use is for white tails, so I nibble at the other end of the bullet weight spectrum.

Go to the knowledge base on this site. It has load data from Hornady and some loads that I put in there. I used 30.5 grains of Lil'gun and WSR primers for my 300 gr loads. Velocity was 1850 fps and accuracy was great. They are good to 150 yards, when the velocity starts to drop into the speed of sound area, and the accuracy begins to fall off. You can also use 32.0 grains -- this is the top end of the Hornady data -- which I do not recommend that you exceed. That velocity was over 1900 fps.

Personally, the 30.5 grain load pretty much duplicates factory 45-70 data out of a longer barrel. It the 45-70 knocks things down with this velocity, there is really no need to exceed it.

What are you going to whack with this?

Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to shoot this at. Targets, helpless fruit/vegetables, possibly a deer if I can remember to chamber a round next time I walk into the woods(Long story) :D But I really just want to play with some different loads for fun. The 250 FTX is just kinda boring because it's what Hornady's factory offering is currently. So it boils down to my own boredom and curiosity. Thanks again to Siringo and Hoot. When I get a chance, hopefully I can post some pics and load data.

I know what you mean about the experimenting. Well ya know -- after all it did -- I can back to the 250 fxt. Made full circle.

I still want to use 400 gr cast bullets w/the proper gas check. Hummmm -- heard nothing from the cast bullet guys -- guess I will send a note!

I don't know if it will help you but I have used the 300 gr. SST bullet with 28.5 grains of Lil Gun.
The 250 gr SST and the 300 are my most accurate loads. I run the 350 gr with 32 grains Lil gun.

I found some load data thanks to hoot and Siringo and I just picked up a box of the 300 XTP Mags last night. I should be able to load them up today at some point and give them a run. i will be starting at 28 grains of LIl' Gun and put them through my chronograph to see what I'm pushing. Hopefully all goes well and I will be typing with all 10 fingers :D

Well I think I screwed up already. I bought 300 XTP's, not 300 XTP MAG. Will I be able to safely load these at lower velocities or should I just return them?
