I should be able to load them up today at some point and give them a run. i will be starting at 28 grains of LIl' Gun and put them through my chronograph to see what I'm pushing. Hopefully all goes well and I will be typing with all 10 fingers :D

Well I think I screwed up already. I bought 300 XTP's, not 300 XTP MAG. Will I be able to safely load these at lower velocities or should I just return them?

The XTP MAG's are designed to expand at our normal speeds and for full house loads in the 460S&W. The Regular XTP's are designed to expand at 45 COLT velocities. Both are safe, as far as the bullet goes, but both will work, provided you are happy with the design parameters. You Make the call..t

lawle102-
For shooting targets, the 300 XTP (Hornady # 45230) should do as well as the 300 XTP/MAG (Hornady #45235).

For shooting helpless fruits and vegetable, the 300 XTP bullets will be better than the 300 XTP/Mag bullets. On watermelons, cantaloupes, etc., the XTPs will make a splash and splat that will be ever so much more soul-satisfying than the harder 300 XTP/Mags. The same will hold true for gallon water jugs.

Try very hard NOT to shoot a deer or other larger animal with the plain XTP; obtain some XTP/Mags for that purpose. The XTPs have the potential for coming apart quickly at 450B velocities, and making surficial wounds on deer rather than penetrating adequately.

Your 300 XTP bullets (Hornady # 45230) have two cannelures, right?

Yeah that is kind what I figured. For the money I paid, I don't mind blowing through them rather quickly before I can get some of the mags.

I just loaded 10 rounds tonight but won't get to shoot them till Sunday. I put 5 on the first cannelure with 28 GRs of LIL GUN and then I put 5 on the second cannelure with 28 GRS of LIL GUN. I am going to shoot each through a chrony to get an idea of how much this changes velocity and also check for pressure signs. Again, thanks to everyone who has responded. I will see if I can come up with something to post for data and results.

Better said, with one slight add on. The results of the std bullet should transfer directly to the Mag's. I can't find any real difference in the two. Also, Your chosen load seems a little light to me, watch that under-charging, it can be hazardous. I myself, have easily reproduced the speeds we see with the 250's, while actually using your 300's..t

Wildcatter, I will definitely check and make sure there is no issue with velocities. But again, I will make sure every round I fire is as safe as possible. Thanks again.

Well wildcatter, you were right. 28 GRs of Lil Gun behind that 300 XTP was slow, 10 shots and the average was 1740 FPS. All of these rounds were crimped as well. I will begin working this round up until I hit about 1900-2000 FPS. Thanks for the input guys.

30.5 grs or 32.0 grs worked for me -- with WSR. Less charge being more accurate.

for what its worth, a really good fruits and veggies load for me is 39 grs of h110 and a 180 grain speer gold dot hollow point. Dispatches watermelon with extreme prejudice.

What type of velocity were you pulling with that much H110?

Hello ,

I was wondering what your findings for the 300 xtp and xtp mags?
Thanks
