Rimfire basics

Postby bigboreshooter » Tue Feb 14, 2012 6:10 pm

I am waiting on a suppressor for my .22lr. While purchasing it I read about how dirty .22's are, from not burning powder properly. Making it nescasary to tear apart suppressor for cleaning after each session. A question arose in my mind " would it burn better if ignition was from multiple strike points vs single strike?" sort of like multiple point spark plug vs. Single point, which has been proven to ignite better. Any thoughts or I already tried that's are welcome.

I always thought it was just the inexpensive gun powder used that burned dirty.

There's a lot of variation in rimfire powders used...you need to try a bunch of brands to see which is cleanest burning, they really do different things.

I have zero experience with suppressors, but I do collect 22 rifles and shoot them often. I prefer CCI ammo because it seems to burn the cleanest. The dirty ammo IMHO is Remington and Winchester. But I don't have any opinion on the foreign made stuff. I don't buy it.

This is a good article on the .22lr. I still think a multiple strike would improve ignition.

Had a brick of Rem Golds. Too many FTFs. Gave away almost the entire brick. Later tried with a 50box and same results. A failure with the Fed bulk 550s is so rare that I do not remember any. 'Course I'm 69 and cannot remember lots of details.

I shot some Fiocchi 22 Mag ammo the other day and had no problems. Might try more.

I've had good luck with their shot gun and 243 win ammo as well.
