I knocked a nice mulie down with one shot from my Savage .308 at 389 yards a few years back. But I think I'm with Hoot on this one I'd go with the 300 OSSM. In fact I almost bought it instead of my 450 but I have a 280 remington that will do everything it will so I decided to get the big bore AR.

So I just went and bought a new Ar15 stripped lower a little while ago. So, now that I have that, it means I have to build something

I just don't know a whole lot about other calibers.

I've seen the 300 ossm/wssm, .338, .358, etc etc. What all can I put on an ar15 lower, thats not a .223/5.56. I want something to shoot farther than the bushy, but I also don't want $5/per bullet haha. So, which direction should I take? Too, I would like to build my upper this time, possibly (still debating).

What to build.... What to build. I'm right there in that same rut. Lower#2 is practically finished and I have NO CLUE where I want to go now. But I have a feeling WC has a treat in store for me soon.

Here's some of my experiments with my .300 OSSM:
Hornady 140gr Monoflex 44-47gr IMR 8208XBR 2914-3057fps Accuracy load 46gr @ 3034fps (1.2 MOA)
Speer 150gr HotCor 41-46gr IMR8208XBR 2562-2890fps Accuracy load 43gr @ 2700fps (.92 MOA)
Speer 150 HotCor 44-49gr Varget 2490-2960fps Accuracy load 49gr @ 2960fps (.52 MOA)
Nosler 150 BT 45-46gr IMR 8208XBR 2830-2880fps accuracy load 46gr @ 2880fps (1 MOA)
Speer 150gr DeepCurl 45-48gr AR-Comp 2808-3013fps Accuracy load 45gr @ 2854fps (.6 MOA)
Speer 165gr HotCor 48-50gr Varget 2818-2920fps Accuracy load 49.5 @ 2904fps (.82 MOA)
Speer 165gr HotCor 45-48gr AR-Comp 2750-2963fps Accuracy load 47 @ 2862fps (1.4 MOA)
Hornady 168gr Amax 46-48gr RL15 2700-2820fps Accuracy load 47.5gr @ 2800fps (1.2 MOA)
Hornady 168gr Amax 46-48gr Varget 2700-2778fps Accuracy load 47.5gr @ 2760fps (.98 MOA)
Hornady 180gr SP 43-46.5gr AR-Comp 2679-2854fps Accuracy load 46.5 @ 2854fps (.75 MOA)
Nosler 180gr PP 43-45gr AR-Comp 2660-2770fps Accuracy load 45gr @ 2770fps (.63 MOA)

These were wide ranging load load jumps without zeroing in on a tighter range of load weights around accuracy nodes, so the ultimate accuracy is indeterminate, but it gives you examples of the power in the upper. They are the culmination of 3+ month's work going out about once a week. I will be going out tomorrow to try the Hornady 180gr bullets with both 8208XBR and Varget, along with some more Remmy Accutips with different taper crimps applied over the factory crimp.

It is not expensive to shoot if you reload. Basically, you buy a bag of Winchester 25 WSSM brass, anneal them, either resize using an neck expander or fireform them to 30 caliber (I've done both) and you're all set. I've gotten my best results with fireformed brass using Mike Milli's (dtech.com) process.

I've about run the gamut with it and am looking to try a new caliber now. Times being what they are finance wise, I'll probably sell the .300 OSSM upper, reloading equipment and some preloaded rounds to someone to finance my next foray. It has been fun developing around that caliber. I'm either going to go in the direction of an AR10 based system, or wait and see what shakes out with a 450b necked down to 6.5mm at some point in the future. The .358 WSSM has some appeal as well as the .44 Claymore being developed over on beyond556.com.

Gotta keep expanding my horizons. ;)

Price has gone up to around $80.00. But that's still a good deal.

OK, I am giving serious throught to building a lower for my other Bushmaster upper, either my XM15 or my 450 (which ever one doesn't have the lower attached at the moment).

I guess that personal preference would come in to play on the choice of pistol grip and stock, but what about the receiver and all of the bits and pieces that go inside. Should I buy a kit of pins and springs from like Brownells, Midway, or Windham for example on the assumption that there is not much difference between take-down pins. I guess some other parts that I might want to customize would include the trigger group, bolt release - anything else? How about a recommendation on the receiver from TDS Guns (http://tdsguns.com/store/product/6733/Aeroprecision-Lower-.223-Multi-Forged-3-for-%24189.95/ mentioned in an earlier post?

Hi Jim, Just read about the Aero's over here:

http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1356935#Post1356935

Have also read other forums about them and they seam good to go
As for the rest, that's the fun of it, all depends on what you want to build and how much you want to spend.

Another question: There are a lot of parts kits out there for lowers - DPMS appears to be one of the most common and it comes without a pistol grip, which I like, since I plan to purchase one from Fobus. Any one have any problems with the DPMS for the internals of the lower?

Yet another question: I will need to build a buffer assembly, but the kits for that usually come with a stock. Since I plan to use a Mako GL, what are the parts of the buffer assembly that I will need to purchase. From reading around, I think they are:
    buffer spring
    buffer spring retainer
buffer tube (commercial or mil spec to match the stock)
recoil plug (not sure what that is, I'm thinking it is the cylinder looking thing that fits in the buffer spring against the lower receiver?)
    extension tube lock plate
    buffer tube end plate

Anyone with any advice on buiding the buffer assembly? Am I missing something or have I mis identified anything?

Jim, I've used DPMS lower parts kits a couple times and I have not had any issues with it.

For the stock assembly you need a buffer tube (Com or mil spec), buffer and spring, the lock plate and a castle nut. If I remember right, the buffer retainer pin and buffer retainer pin spring are usually included in a lower parts kit.

For my 6.8 build I just bought a complete stock set up with a basic M4 style stock, then replaced it with a MOE. Shopping around on Brownells and with my LE discount, it was cheaper than buying the parts individually.

Jim, Colohunter is correct, the buffer spring and retainer come with the lower parts kit (LPK).
I got my buffer, spring, etc from Brownell's, here's the link:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0/k=ar-15+buffer/t=P/ksubmit=y/Products/All/search=ar-15_buffer

Lot's of people use DPMS LPK's. I like Spike's Tacticle, don't know why just do. :D :D :D
Spike's has an enhanced LPK that includes some stuff I like, here's another link:

http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Spike_s_Tactical_Enhanced_Lower_Parts_Kit_p/sp-slpk301.htm

If you buy from JoeBob use PM for a 5% discount.
