Forward assist. An Upper build Question.

I'm considering an upper that does not feature a forward assist or dust cover. This upper will be incorporated on my next AR build, the 6.5 Grendel. Is this a logical choice or should I reconsider and go with the traditional upper that has the forward assist and dust cover?

I have a slick sided DPMS lo pro on my 6.8. I haven't had any issues with it, but it isn't a combat rifle. If that is the look you want, I say go for it.

I prefer the cleaner look of a slickside, never had the need for the FA to date.

When I'm doing load development, I prefer to ease the cartridges in using the charging handle and then set them home using the FA. I also have a slick sider for my 6.5 Grendel upper and in that case, I ease them in, then pull back an inch on the charging handle and let the limited thrust set them home. Given my druthers, I'd prefer an FA though. My luck being what it is, I'd need a second shot on a trophy buck and the darned thing would stop just short of battery.

Yeah. Man, I like the looks of that slick side, but I too have Murphy chasing me around. BTW I'm watching your favorite MST3K Flick. The Indestructable man. (Lon Chaney).

Always, always, get a dust cover.

And use it!

The funny thing about my 450 is the dust cover doesn't work. The detent on the door does not protrude far enough, so from the day I got it, I haven't been able to close the dust cover. I emailed Bushy about it shortly after I noticed it, but I haven't heard back from them in 2 years or so, so I figured I would just leave it open.
