Chrono'ed my 16" Brownells with factory/my handloads

Postby PJames » Sat Apr 29, 2017 4:16 pm

I am really loving my side charger 450 bushmaster. Topped off with a 3x9 Nikon bdc. I built it with a 16" Brownells 1:20 twist barrel. Factory 250gr. Hornady Black ran on average 2,137 fps. My 225gr. FTX's handloads ran 2,279 fps with 43grs of W296. My loads where factory roll crimped and Lee crimped from a modified Lee fcd 45 colt.
Factory 250gr...
2,130
2,130
2,139
2,140
2,145
Avg. 2,137 fps

225gr. Handload...
2,277
2,282
2,284
2,277
2,279
Avg. 2,279 fps

I put two milk jugs out at 280 yards and 314 yards. I sighted in on the one at 280 using the bottom circle and let it rip. I was awarded with a big splat jug totally destroyed. I then took aim at the last jug at 314 yards put the bottom post dead center. Needless to say it was dead nuts on. Love the scope and my set-up. BTW I was shooting from field position no bench just my day pack.

I wonder if the Lee fcd helped? I also used it on my factory rounds that I shot over the chrono.

Next time I'll shoot some groups out to 200/300 yards. I have extreme confidence though that this build will be a Bear, elk ,deer or anything I set the sights on will be in big trouble
