Powder Vihtavuori and Hornady FTX 250 grains

Postby Ruben Scipion » Sun Aug 13, 2017 2:53 pm

Very good, my name is Ruben, and I am from Spain.
I recently purchased an Ar-15 Bushmaster 450.
I want to start reloading ammunition with the Vihtavuori powder and the Hornady FTX Bullets 250 grains.
For these points and that powder I do not find any tables.
Could you help me? I would use them for wild boar hunting.

Which Vihtavuori to use?

Many thanks in advance for your answers.

Bien Venidos Ruben!

V V N110 is fast for the bullet and N120 is slow. I do not know if there is an N115.
With N110, start at 2.10 grams and work up at .05 gram increments. Watch for signs of pressure beyond 2.25 grams.
With N120 load the case full, compressed.
With both powders, load to 57.15mm overall length and taper crimp to 12.09mm.

If you can get the Hornady 200gr or 225 gr Hornady FTX, they are a better choice for N110. The Hornady 300gr XTP Mag bullet is a good choice for N120.

Good Luck and report back to us how it performs.

Welcome, Ruben! 450BM is an excellent choice for wild boar, certainly. There is a lot of information on this website for reloading for the 450B, Buena suerte caza!

Thank you very much for the information. I'll try those loads. (32.41 grains)
As for the primers. Would the Winchester Small Rifle be okay?
Do you recommend Horny dies that come 4 elements?

Thank you and greetings from Spain....

I think most people have the Hornady 4-die set...it works well.

As for primers, most use Remington #7-1/2 small rifle benchrest primers, but at least look for Small Rifle Magnum primers from the other manufacturers...450BM needs a "hot" primer for best functioning.

Ruben;

The Winchester Small Rifle primer is the second best choice behind the Remington 7 1/2 primer. If you already have WSR primers, use them. If you do not have primers yet and can get REM 7 1/2, that would be the best choice in my opinion.

I made a batch of 250 grain FTX at 40.0 grains of LilGun using CCI #41 primers and they seem to do really well.
