5744 Powder

Postby cwlongshot » Tue Aug 14, 2018 5:38 am

Anyone tried it with success in the 450?

I have had very good results using it in the 500 S&W. I loaded up a dozen last night to try.

Looks like it is positioned well for 300 grainers.

CW-

The Western Powder people (Ramshot/Accurate) show loads for seven different bullets with 5744, from 200- to 325-grain bullets. The recipes are available in their on-line list of loads, and are also in their newly published reloading manual.

5744 doesn't run light bullets as fast as Enforcer/4100, and it doesn't keep up with 1680 with heavier bullets. There's no information supplied about accuracy. 5744 is a superb powder for some applications, particularly cast bullets.

It's unclear from your post whether you loaded a dozen 500 S&W or 450B cartridges. If the 450, please post your results. (It might be well if you posted them in the 450B-specific reloading forum.)

Thanks.

I used it almost exclusively in the 500 S&W as I never got another powder to shoot accurately!!

I loaded up a few for testing with a 250 bullet jacketed. Shot them Sunday. They where nice shooting and accurate. But truth told, everything seems to shoot great theu this barrel! RARR.

Oddly, I've used it for my old .50-70 Trapdoor rifles.

I did manage a 1" group a 50 yds with it. Pretty much zero kick when I shoot them. Being a low pressure situation, I do get several unburned grains of powder in the chamber left over.

My first 6.8 SPC loads were with 5744, since I already had it handy. They worked well.

Since then, I found the courage to do actual black powder loads and haven't looked back. Pressure washer helps with the cleanup. :)

Yes I have loaded a bunch of 450 Bushmaster with this powder and groups are more then good it works great. Cases are fill 3/4 full with Federal primer 200 gr bullets in a CVA 450 If I wanted 3000 ft a second I would have stayed with 270
