Speer reduced loads

Postby Hopalong » Mon Aug 20, 2018 3:14 pm

I have a neat old 308 I want to take deer hunting this year. It's a model 66, short, light, given to me by a friend
many moons ago. The light part is handy except when it comes to recoil and I want to experiment with some
light bullets and the reduced loads that Speer recommends and wondered if anyone here had any experience
with them?
Thanks.

Hopalong-
I have Speer #14 (2007 - 7th printing 2013), but not the lastest #15.

In #14, the reduced loads are listed with either of two powders, SR-4759 and IMR 4198. 4759 has been discontinued.

With 4198, the listed bullets are weights of 110, 125/130, 180, and 200 grains. I tried the 110-grain loads briefly in 2011. The recommended starting load was 26.0 grains with a max of 30.0. In the DuPont Handloader's Guide from 1984 I found the max load listed for 4198 with a 110 grain bullet was 38.5 grains.

I loaded a series of cartridges from 26 to 36 grains 4198 with the Sierra 110-grain hollow pt, flat base bullet (Sierra #2110). All the cartridges went bang, and printed small groups at 50 yards. I did not use a chronograph. I loaded these for a grandson who was still recoil shy. He had no problems, even with the 36-grain load that probably approached 2800 fps. The rifle was a Remington 788.

Hopefully some others with more experience will respond to your question.

Bob-
I was looking at the 4198 loads and the lighter 110-125 bullets in the Speer #14 manual. And when I bought the powder the guy at the shop was curious what I wanted it for and did mention the 4759 was discontinued. Good to know they work well, sounds like just what I need. One thing I was curious about was the gap in the bullet weights that you noted, 150 and 165 grains were listed but used the 4759 powder. Seems to be similar in burn rate to each other, at least what I find. Not far off 1680 either.
Thanks.
