Hello everyone. New to the forum.
I have several boxes of 225 XPB'S (#30558) that I was loading in the 454 Casull. The cylinder throats in my Ruger are very generous and these bullets did not perform well (had to go to cast). Has anyone shot any deer or hogs with the 225 XPB'S at Bushmaster velocities? If so, did the bullets perform well? These are the bullets marketed for the 45 LC with the single crimping groove. My blind is at the top of a bluff with a river below. Last 10 deer have been taken from 10 to 60 yards and I am wondering if a bullet designed for the 45 LC will lose it's petals at those speeds.

my guess they will lose the petals at 450 speeds, but will no doubt kill whatever your aiming at.

ive got the 250gr #30562 (the casull version) but i got them as blems and only intend to use them for blasters.

like al said, i'm sure they'll frag the petals off on impact at bushmaster speeds - so they might be a fun varmint load... that big ole ashtray of a HP should cause some intense tissue disruption - but i'm sure that base would continue to punch thru

here's a gel test of the 140gr xpb (#30453) fired out of a handi rifle 357 mag at around 1700 fps.... it retained most of its petals when fired into water jugs

I did some testing on the Mag Tech 225gr SCHP designed for the 454 casull.
I was finally able to do some gel testing.

I have ten boxes of original Freedom Arms .451" bullets made for the Casull and packaged by Freedom Arms. Two boxes of 260gr JHP, one box of 300gr JSP, and the rest 260gr JSP. Most of the boxes have never been opened. I wonder how the 260gr JSP's would hold up at the 2,200 FPS or so that the bushmaster delivers. The freedom Arms website says that this bullet (in a 10" barreled model 83) can be loaded to speeds approaching 2,100 FPS with 37 grains of H110 in the 454 at nearly 54,000 PSI. If they will stand up to that then I am thinking they will (should) hold together at bushmaster speeds. I am not using them in my Casull because I shoot 300gr cast gas checks. They are just sitting on the shelf so I might as well give them a try. What do you guys think?

I might have some of those 300gr FA bullets from my Casual days, if I recall, the cores in them were pretty hard and jackets fairly thick. Never seen the JHP's to compare, but I wouldn't hesitate to try them.

My best friend owns a gun store and over the years we have accumulated quite a stash of projectiles. If I can achieve good performance with what I have on hand then I might as well use some of it. No sense letting the stuff pile up on my reloading benches and collect dust, although i'm sure more modern bullets will still make their way into the stacks of stuff already down there (UGH!) I have some of the 250 TTSX Barnes on order and am anxious to see how they perform as well. The CA Mesa is a nice shooting gun. I have only had it for a little while and just shot up the factory stuff we had laying around, but now that I am generating enough brass I can start experimenting with different loads.
