Here's some lighter bullets to try, if the link works it's to Hornady .452 200 grain FTX style bullets that were marketed for the 460 S&W.

I would think we would need to try some faster powders with these lite bullets. I was reading an article about the 50B and it was pointed out that the bullet has to be in the case at least .285 inches to get a good burn. We might run into this with the 450B. I mentioned this before, but Hornady folks recommended 2400. They said they had pulled data from reloading manuals using 296 and H110 with lite bullets because of inconsistant pressures and velocities. Guess we will just have to find out.

I saw those and thought "That's not much of a sale"

Price wise it will be in the same range as the 250 gr. These are not plinking bullets.

My experiences with the 185-grain Hornady SWCs certainly agrees with the problem of "getting a good burn" with light bullets in the 450B. Pressures and velocities using Lil'Gun and 296 were very inconsistent.

Do you recall for which bullet were the Hornady people recommending the use of 2400?

It was the 200 fxt. They only recommend .452 diameter -- but that is to be expected from the manufacture.

At 2500 fps (B.C. = .155) this bullet would perform (trajectory wise) right along with the 250 gr fxt.

I see this is an old thread, but I'm new to the .450, so I thought I would chime in with some results with the 200gr FTX. I loaded 41grs of Lil Gun using CCI 450 primers. I seated just to cover the cannelure, matched factory load measurements on the taper crimp. The results are nothing short of outstanding. 5 shot groups under an inch, mild recoil, very clean cases, suggesting good start pressures. Anyone else tried these? Thanks' CDOG.

I worked on this thread to help people contemplating the 200 FTX. My main effort was with Alliant 2400 and it works well, despite pressure stacking up quickly as loads increase. There are accuracy nodes about every two grains increase in charge. I recently started working with Lil Gun and have not uploaded my latest data to that thread. Though the velocity increase is much slower per grain of powder increase, I've yet to encounter pressure signs. Once I get some more brass, I plan on continuing my work with Lil Gun. Check that thread now and then for continuing updates. In all the FTX bullets I'm working with, max velocity is not the order of the day as they over-expand at velocities above about 2000fps. Given their poor BCs, the ideal muzzle velocity to deliver 2000fps at 100 yards is between 2200-2300fps. If you intend to use it at 200 yards, then by all means, load it up higher. I bought mine for a brush (<100 yds) gun for deer myself.
