Muzzleloader button buck

Postby rohk » Sat Dec 24, 2011 6:28 pm

Got to test the 225 ftx's on a button buck this week. 120 of BP substitute, still need to chrono, but figure around 2000 to 2200 fps. Shot at 20 yards thru some brush slight quartering entered just behind left shoulder went thru right shoulder and stopped at skin, right shoulder had a hole the size of my fist in it. Deer went 25 yards and was done. Recovered bullet retained 72% weight expansion was to .756". Iowa only allows center-fire in the lower 2 counties and then only late January antler-less so this was the best i could do for now.

You can't eat the antlers anyway. Nice buck.

I have a chrono and will get speed as soon as able.

Recovered bullet was from a finishing shot.

Wow! That's the kind of data that is useful. A finishing shot is very close, usually and to have 72% bullet retention and an expansion greater than 3/4", well, that little 250, is holding up great.

What were the circumstances in recovering the bullet?

Either way, I know now, where to go to get some Back-Strap Medallions, in a strawberry sauce. Anybody else ready for a road trip to Rohk's AO??..

Finishing shot was at 5 yards max. Deer was lying down bullet was recovered by cutting slit in skin and removing. Bullet was 225 FTX photos of recovered bullet below.
