Rifle range upgrade

Postby Texas Sheepdawg » Tue Mar 06, 2012 1:55 am

Well, some decent weather has finally arrived so we spent this weekend preparing to put up more fencing so we can allow the goats to graze on the rifle range in relative safety from yotes and such. But it looks like I am going to have to shift the backstop over several feet to give room for the fence to pass behind it. So I guess I better get my Thumper and Gretchen sighted in before I start dismantling the backstop. Once moved, I will have to also reconfigure the back yard fenceline to open up the range for line of site shift. But once we get this project finished, I will have a more open range and easy shots at 100 yards. This fall, I may build a covered enclosure with benches to shoot off of. But we gotta get about 1000 foot of fence installed first.
Spencer took this picture yesterday, I am taking a break from digging post holes and driving Tposts. Blackland clay is tough stuff to dig post holes in. T Posts ain't bad as long and the gumbo clay is wet enough.

Update. While setting posts on Wednsday, I got to a point where the back stop on my range had to give way to a fenceline. So my shooting is going to be restricted. But once we get this done, it is gonna be nice. Just as an observation, while moving the rail road ties I noticed that the old tires behind the ties were SHREDDED from the shots I made with the 450B. There was shrapnel all in the tires and gapping holes in the tires. One of the railroad ties literally had been shot in half and broke off into two pieces. That 450 round is NOT kind to barriers. As an upgrade, all tires will now be filled with sand.

As soon as it stops raining and drys up! We have had about 1.7 inches of rain these last few days. Much needed too.
It is supposed to rain most of today too. It's a swamp right now. I'm stuck in the house all day.

Reload! That's what I'm doing today. Couple hundred rounds of 223 with some Hornady v-max bullets for an up and coming prairie dog shoot!

Vmax's are fantastic bullets. Did you take advantage of the sale Midway is having?

I have a 223 Savage 12BTVSS that simply loves those 55gr pills of theirs. Ditto on the 55gr NBT's. won't shoot the 68gr Match bullets worth a darn though.
