Great Bill, now we're getting somewhere. That conversation with Don, must have been very interesting.

Though the .38 wad-cutters are generally .358" in dia, as opposed to my .355" bullet, they are still in the Ball-Park, kinda sorta, both being .35 caliber.

The 1.3" group at fifty yards, if shot in a vacuum, equates to a linear line that is 5.2" at 200yds or 2.6 MOA.

I'm wondering if someone has data on really straight shooting .358" rifles, though not apples to apples, might still reveal some interesting data. This data might be tough to quantify, as no one really uses this caliber in Bench-Rest or other Competitions, but worth looking for.

How about data from 9mm Matches? Or how about a rifle barreled 9mm pistol, with a rifle stock. I know I'm stretching, but somebody, somewhere has done this work???

We're closing in.

In looking at .358 Winchester Custom rifle builds, I see them shooting 1.5" +- .4 at 100yds, of course, again, this is apples to oranges, but somewhat comparable..

Ok, just found this, as seen on the Cast Boolits web board:

""I have a .358 Win on a Omark single shot target rifle. Ben's right the sweet spot is around 1700fps. I have had a (as in only one..t) five shot group just under 2'' at 200yds. that's the best I can do. You have to use the grim death hold as it twist's a lot on firing.""
lead Foot.

This is web talk, but could be accurate.

1.75"+- groups at 100yds seem to be the norm, using the .358win and long barrels, and straight shooting guns. I wonder what those guns would shoot if a 9mm barrel/cartridge combo, were used on that 308 case (9mm-358 win???)..

It was really tough looking that stuff up on my phone. Now that I'm back, I get to use a real computer.

I still cant find any accuracy numbers on 9mm rifles, but I did find this chart for the Springfield XDm 9mm, 5.25 barrel"

Ammo Maker Weight Bullet type Accuracy @ 25 yards
Sellier & Bellot 115gr. FMJ 1.5”
Fiocchi 115gr. FMJ 1.4”
Remington UMC (Value Pack) 115gr. FMJ Less than 1”
Federal LE HST 124gr. HST 2.1”
Corbon DPX +P 115gr. Barnes XPB 3.5”
Speer LE Got Dot 124gr. GDHP 2.5”

How about the 9mm HK prototype WSG2000. I'm hoping you can extrapolate accuracy from a ballistic calculator. Here is the pertainant data from a long article:

The fruit of HK’s research into the eventual fodder for the WSG2000 was the 9X90mm MEN round. A joint development between HK and the German ammunition firm of Metallwerk Elisenhütte Nassau (MEN), this new round of ammunition provided nearly the exact same exterior ballistics as identified by BRL at Aberdeen. Essentially a necked down .50 BMG (12.7 X 99) case, the 9X90 mm MEN round contained a 340-grain .35 caliber (9 mm) boattail projectile with a confirmed muzzle velocity of 3,440 fps. With a case length of 90 mm and overall length of 120 mm, the 9X90 mm MEN round developed 58,000 p.s.i. of chamber pressure with a ballistic coefficient of .74.

Holy Cow, that would prolly burn the rifling out of the barrel in something less than fifty rounds.

Good research though.

Dawg, that 9 plinker would give us something, but ya gotta take the human error out and tie that thing down, in home brew, machine rest fashion. In other words, this isn't about how good we are, but what is the potential of the 9mm. Otherwise, give it a go.

What do the web boards say is the accuracy potential of that Ruger, at 100-200yds??
