Well.... I warned you it was going to pop up again and it did.
So here we are today with this update.
Call your senators and congressmen every day and remind them to oppose this treaty and warn them that signing on and ratifying this treaty will destroy us all, literally.

OK I didn't realize they had to ratify UN resolutions once they passed in the UN?

IE, if the UN passes a resolution to increase sanctions against Iran for their nuclear proliferation. I didn't realize it had to be ratified by our legislative branch? Seems like it would take a long time to get any resolutions passed.

OK, I must have slept through that part of Civics class. Just googled it. Big difference between a resolution and a Treaty.

Never mind...

The treaty has been approved in the UN General Assembly, where the three votes against it were by Syria, North Korea, and Iran. There were 23 (I think) abstentions. The US supported it, naturally. It next goes to the member states. If a majority approve it, it goes into force for those countries that appove it. For the US to give its approval, it must adopt it. This requires that it be signed by the President (which he will do), then it must be approved by a 2/3 majority in the Senate, then implemented through the legislative process.

There are not enough votes in the Senate to approve the treaty (an amendment was made to the recent budget resolution opposing the treaty signed by a majority of the Senate). O can try and implement it or parts of it by executive order, but he is running out of bullets on gun control executive orders, having just issued 23 meaningless ones. The ongoing debate on the proposed gun control legislation indicates nothing like the national gun registration system implicitly required by the treaty will get any traction.

Just call me cautiously optimistic that the UN ATT will have no impact in the US, and will be widely ignored in those countries that adopt it, especially if they are arms exporters or are in the process of putting down a local rebellion (ref Syria).
