I wonder if the local fire departments are aware of this, and if not, how they have planned to respond to a fire involving (in some cases) a lot of stored ammo.

Education is a two-way street. I give a few presentations every year to folks in Fire Service on various topics. Part of my charge as an Engineer, or at least how I see it. When they are approached, they will often accept education if presented well.

Walk on over to your local fire house with a plate of cookies and have a chat with them. It might save your house some day.
