Bushy Goes Auto!

Postby Ridge1 » Sat Nov 12, 2011 9:54 pm

Put 450b upper on my 223 lower that does not have alot of rounds through it.Went to the range to site in 450b upper with new scope, put 3 Hornady factory loads in mag and when i took first shot the thing went auto and shot the 3 rounds. needless to say I put that away and did not shoot it anymore. anyone got any ideas where to start to look for the problem.

As I recall, this would most likely be a disconector problem in the fire control group of the lower. Try this function check:

Make sure your rifle is completely empty, no mag, and on safe.

Point it in a safe direction and press the trigger. The hammer shouldn't fall.

Flip the selector to the fire position and press the trigger and hold it there. The hammer should fall.

Continue holding the trigger pressed while you pull the charging handle. Release the charging handle and then release the trigger. The disconnector should reset and the hammer shouldn't fall.

Now press the trigger again and the hammer should fall.

Billy hit it on the head. Do his test to check to see if the disconnecter is working properly. If not, you will need to check it and/or just replace it. Did you build this lower or buy it assembled? If you bought it asse, bled you can contact the company and I'm sure they would look at it. If you built it, you will have to fix it.

Another test is to remove the upper.
Be careful and do not let the hammer strike the receiver.
Place thumb on hammer and squeeze trigger letting the hammer fall slowly. Then with your thumb on the hammer, keep the trigger squeezed tight and push the hammer with your thumb back as far as it will go until you hear and feel a crisp "Click". Keep your trigger squeezed. Slowly back your thumb away from the hammer just enough to catch the hammer should it release. Then slowly let off the trigger and watch for the hammer to react. It should click and bump up just a tiny bit then stop. This should be the normal cocked position for the hammer. If it doesn't act right and it literally tries to continue forward to strike to fire, your Disconnector or Disco Spring is in trouble or it could be your trigger or hammer pins have shifted out of place.
Be careful! Do Not let the hammer strike the receiver.

Ok, Ridge1, these guys have got it and if it test out ok, as these guys have described, in that case, more than likely you have experienced a "Bump-Fire", which can occur if you are not holding the weapon tight enough, which often happens, when one is more use to a much lower recoiling weapon, that doesn't require much, Man-Handling, so-to-speak..

It would be fun if you were expecting it, but when you aren't, it could be pretty dangerous.
