Mag Tech 230 Gr. FMJ testing.

Postby Texas Sheepdawg » Sun Nov 13, 2011 9:31 pm

I am Texas Sheepdawg. My warnings are clear. I will confirm that my R&D on these rounds are pushing the envelope.
What worked in my AR15 will NOT work in your AR 15. My AR is unique. I strongly advise in all of my posts on the 230 Grain FMJ to start low at 38.0 grains of LilGun and work your load up. Know your chamber. INTIMATELY.
All of my loads were developed with the help of Timothy LeGendre almost literally looking over my shoulder.
My advice to all of you is this. Do NOT use my current R&D data for the 230 Grain FMJs for any rifle with a 1:16 twist. That data is intended ONLY for AR15s with the 1:24 TWIST.
YOU’VE BEEN ADVISED.

We had a fairly nice day today so I grabbed the gear and set up my Chrony to test some more 230 Gr. Mag Techs loads that I worked up earlier this afternoon. However, I forgot about it getting dark earlier so I think my Chrony got cranky after the first shot and only gave me errors so I stopped and will continue the tests tomorrow. Here are the results so far.

16 or 20" barrel? I have been wanting to try FMJs but haven't had a chance yet. I'll be looking forward to your results.

20" Barrel. I started a while back at 38 Grains, but I really did not like the performance. I had a few hangfires, but then again, I was also not using the Legendre Crimp.

Spent the morning out on the range testing the remaining workup loads. Not sure what was going on, but velocities were all over the place. Accuracy was not great either. Will post results later after I have looked at results. I think the main problem is my shooting table has about had it. It was very wobbly and even the Grendel groups were not quite what one would normally expect at 50 Yards. I did finally get the table stable enough to put 7 450 Bushmaster 250 Grain FTX factory rounds right on top of each other and I also took the opportunity to Chrony them. Lots of Data... So Little time.

Damn, it looks like we shouldn't mess with shooting anything but factory loads. That's an awesome group.

Yeah, but remember, I was more focused on not blowing up my Chrony than grouping at this time in the workup. I am looking for velocities and pressure signs and functioning reliably. Once I start seeing lower SDs and stable velocitys, then I believe I can get the same performance as the factory if not better. Next batch will start at 41.5.
For some reason in my rifle, 38 grains was causing hang fires.

Take my Chrony data and run it through this calculation, the Taylor KO factor.
http://www.beartoothbullets.com/rescour ... 4&cal=.451

A Taylor KO Value of 36 with a bullet that weighs 230 grains, a velocity of 2450, and a diameter of .451.

Ok, to put that into perspective. The M16 at the muzzle, with a 55gr-fmj @ 3200, is pretty ferocious, again with the muzzle pressing right up against your chest. That 5.56 has a TKO of 5.6 TKO units at the muzzle. For Tex's 230gr loading to finally bleed down to 5.6 TKO units, he'll be at about 1700yds. In other words, comparing the two, they will kill approximately the same, when comparing the M16 @ the muzzle and the Tex loading @ 1700yds!!! This is not just theoretical either, the ARMY WOUND BALLISTICS CENTER, spent allot of time and years of effort verifying this, they found, because of the plethora of variables, that there is no perfect formula, but Taylor Knock out (TKO), more than puts them into the ball park, and is very instructive at ruffing-in trends, solutions, and conclusions. This is why nearly all of the front-line ballistics outfits use Taylor Knock Out, as a predictor of "Probable" (as in, Not Conclusive) Terminal Results.

As a further comparison, the Tex Load is at 38 TKO units, right? Well, guess what? The overwhelmingly successful and proven elephant killer, known as the 375H&H, when corrected for a 16 inch barrel (Tex's chosen poison), the 450b vs the 375H&H is a wash, 38 vs 38.8 TKO's, respectively..
