Shore Nuff Al, 40t..
The Gunny wanted to pretty much, exclusively use the various 230grainers and as their speeds will be in the 3100fps +- and prolly (?) on the plus side, the RPM's called for something in the 50t +- area. Now, I have a ton of experience with high speed 230's, with a 45t and I thought someday he might want to shoot 350's and better, the trade-off was 40t, which was thought to be a good starting place and still maintain accuracy with the very fast moving 230's he's so in love with, and for good reason (Hard to beat those FMJ-FP's for over-all use and price.. A.K.A., kill everything on the planet and not break the pocket-book either).
Speaking of high speed 230's, consider something I have said before. We have always had Large Bullets and Small bullets. Large bullets go slow and small bullets go fast. My vision for the 450 Bushmaster/45 Professional (Which we were selling 10+ years before the other Big Bore AR's), was fast big bullets, something the shooting public, hasn't really any experience with, and since the Civil War, we have been bent on smaller and smaller, and, faster and faster bullets. This is the very reason for the 450b, and your observations, are so important. "You" have been seeing and reporting on such Miraculous Events, while using your 450b and now, we're about to smash the Small Bore Wall, by even greater margins.
Now, for a little comparison. But first, keep in mind that the 308 AR-10 is stressed for a cartridge that hovers around about 52,000psi. The 6.5/284 hovers around about 63,000psi. The straight case of the 450LM, will have far less bolt thrust than the 308, at the same pressures, so we should be able to pump up the 450LM (yet to be determined).
Can the 450 LeGendre Magnum be as powerful as the venerable 458 Winchester Magnum, and do I dare do this comparison??? You better believe I do and will!!! I will use Ft/Lb energy numbers, even though I am no fan of them, but as we are, for the most part, much more acquainted with Ft/Lbs, here goes.
The 450 LeGendre Magnum -VS- the 458 Winchester Magnum.
The 450LM using a 230FMJ-FP @3200fps (this speed is only a projection, to be verified soon enough), from a 20" barrel. The 458WM is using a 500gr bullet and it's speed has been corrected to a 20" barrel (2000fps), to keep things as, Apples to Apples, as much as is possible. Both fly pretty much on the same curve to about 230 yards, wherein the better BC of the 458WM, starts to slowly pull away from the 450LM. BUT, the energy numbers are far different.
The 450LM starts life with 5229 Ft/Lbs versus the
458WM at a mere 4440 Ft/Lbs. and because of the BC advantage of the 458, the 458 "DOES NOT" catch the 450LM until they both get to 117yards, wherein the better BC starts to barely pull away from the 450LM.
This is just a start, on the numbers. I'm absolutely confident that we will all be surprised by the future numbers (they're going to go up and down as time marches on). Heck, it will be years before we get to the bottom line on my favorite, the 450 Bushmaster!!
I assure you this new offering, is not the end, other advancements, sure to amaze the 450b shooter (something that won't be easy), are in the works!!
The Competitors can now, get their crying towels out..

PS.. I just got asked. Yes, just straighten out any of the standard length 284's or 6.5/284's, sold by how many different companies, trim them just enough to make sense (even if you screw-up and make them do short, you can still use them in the 450b), and your in business..t
