Spammers creeping back into member list

Postby Hoot » Sun Apr 29, 2012 9:09 pm

Eric;

How much effort or perhaps how much does it cost us, to implement one of those "Text displayed as an Image" registration template add-ons? The ones that spambots are not supposed to be able to do OCR on?

I for one am willing to kick in a ten spot towards what it costs, if you have to subscribe to one or license the technology from a company.

Otherwise, I am more than willing to share the mod burden with Robin, evicting and blocking the IP address from them as they show up.

I am assuming they are not accounts being created by organic spammers, because in that case, the anti-OCR filter doesn't do much good.

Hoot

EDIT: Say Robin, the stats say Eric hasn't been here in over a month. Is he OK?
In Theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In Practice, there is.

Update. The forum is now running on current PHP. The new registration protocols will likely be updated by this coming weekend. This will include a better "Text displayed as an Image" spam bot filter. This is really going to help. Also, be ready to see another Moderator to help Eric and myself keep the forum clean.

I'm not sure if that's going to be part of the update. However, I have found that using "PhotoBucket" and pasting the IMG addresses I. Your post give much more satisfying results.
Let's wait and see what the new upgrade looks like.
