Has anyone had luck with squeezing jacketed .458" diam bullets down to .452" diam in a Lee bullet die?

If so my next questions would be do the old 405 grain 45-70 bullets fit in the mag/ feed in an AR15. Does the extra bullet weight create enough pressure to cycle the rifle?

Michigan just opened up hunting statewide to suppressors and the 450 BM is legal in the southern half of the state but the 458 Socom is not. So now there is a movement (or craze) toward a subsonic 450 BM.

I think you'd want to go in a couple of steps. Back when I was sizing .458 to fit one of my smokeless sabotless ML's, if I went in one pass and sectioned the bullet there was a gap between the jacket and lead. Going in two steps eliminated it and also held size better for my needs. These were with heavy wall bushings I made at work, hardened and honed, one .453. the other around .4506ish to fit the bore. I'd get about .001 springback depending on jacket thickness.

Al. I was looking at your photos. You have some beautiful weapons. I noticed some fancy muzzleloader stuff. Do you do some custom work?

405 grain cast lead on top of 10.8 grains of Trail Boss from a twenty inch barrel generates 950 fps (+/- a few fps) per a V3 chronograph. Standard deviation from the last outing was 4.2. The 405 grain is resized to .452 in a Lee resizing die.

I failed to mention I have an adjustable gas key, but so far haven't adjusting it to see if the pressure being generated is sufficient to properly work the action. I didn't entertain the idea of replacing the gas block on the Bushmaster upper, but due to the level of effort required to replace it I decided against it. I'm not lazy, I'm just not a gun smith. The Sun Devil gas key works extremely well and I highly recommend it. During the next couple of outings I'll see if I can adjust the gas flow to the point where the action fully cycles with either my current load or a slightly heavier charge of Trail Boss. If not, and I want to continue using the load, I'll have to manually cycle the action after each shot, which doesn't bother me in the least bit. I'll call it my straight pull bolt action AR load.

Trail Boss, even with the gas open or closed will not cycle the 450b. They have to be hand cycled. But they make excellent break in ammo for the first 20 rounds. The copper fouling is a lot less ( less cleaning time ) and less wear on the bore. :D :D :D :P :P

i agree - while i havent tested it... you aint getting TB to cycle an AR with pretty much any caliber.

I'm not sure how well or if it would even be a good idea in the 450, but Accurate 1680 is a great powder for subsonics in 300 AAC.
