Barnes 200gr XPB and 275gr TSX

Postby mcb » Tue Jun 06, 2017 7:39 am

Anyone have some load data for either of these bullets they would like to share. I have two boxes of each coming to try. Still waiting for a chance to get to the range to shoot my 225gr FTX and 250 FTX and I got impatient and ordered some Barnes bullets.

I have some Lil'gun and H110 in the powder locker but the local Cabelas has Accurate 1680 and probably one or two other appropriate powders so feel free to suggest any powder that works well.

MCB,

There are several posts under the reloading section of this forum. I can't recall my specific powder charge but I chose a load listed here, backed it down and worked up to it. Hoot put together a rather extensive review of these bullets several years ago. Good luck to you and keep us posted! You'll love these bullets.

Forget the 1680 unless you shoot downsized, heavy .458 bullets. Its generally too slow for most of our purposes. It did well with some downsized 325gr FTX bullets. The two powders you have will serve you just fine.

Thanks guys.

After digging around some more here and playing with quick loads I am going to do the following:

Going to work up towards about 38-39 gr of Lil'gun under the 200gr XPB

Going to work up towards about 32-33gr of H110 under the 275gr TSX.

I am going to push both over all lengths out closer to max 2.26 OAL than the XTPs I have been playing with that are loaded short.

I somehow just caught your last reply, and hopefully you see this in time. Lyman AR reloading book states to load 200gr xpb to an OAL of 2.183" and START Lilgun at 39gr. Max they state is 43.5gr, but you can surpass that, just watch what your doing. If you load the 200 XPB longer, you might need more powder to start. As to the 275 TSX, can't give exact numbers as I load out longer than 2.26". However, I will say that your numbers seem a little low. You want a minimum of 80% of that case filled with Win 296/ H110. Could run into problems if you don't.

Guys
I loaded 24 XPB 200 Gr with H110 from the bottom to the top of the load data. I cant get to the range as often and I'd like so I try to do as much as I can when I get there. After reading this it sounds like H110 isn't the best for the 200 Gr Barnes. I have plenty of Lil Gun at home, should I pull the 200 grainers and go with the Lil gun for the 200's? Am I wasting my time with the H110 with them?
I loaded some 275 Gr Barnes as well with the H110, it sounds like the H110 is better suited for the heavy projectiles.
Thanks all

Yes, I would stick to Lilgun for the 200 xpb. So I would pull em down and save the projectiles for fouler shots.
As to the 275's, some have had good success with Lilgun, but W296/H110 should be better suited.

FWIW, the solid copper bullets survive being reloaded and pulled down a lot better than copper jacketed lead ones. If you just taper crimped down into the driving band groove, they may be good for a second go. For what they cost, its worth a try. I never reuse jacketed lead bullets. You can see the impact squeezing them down into the case has upon them.

So I finally got to do some shooting and chrono work this weekend. Here is what I got with my loads that used the two Barnes Bullets. I was shooting my 20-inch Bushmaster upper kit. My Chrono is an old Shooting Chony Alpha Master set about 12ft in front of the muzzle.

-----------------------------

First load:
Bullet: Barnes 275gr TSX
Brass: Hornady (once fired)
Primer: Winchester Small Rifle
OAL: 2.260
Crimp: .475
Powder: Hodgdon H110

Charge 1: 32.0gr
Average: 1875fps (2146 ft-lbs)
Std Dev: 29.64 (5-shots)

Charge 2: 33.5gr
Average: 1923fps (2257 ft-lbs)
Std Dev: 36.63 (5-shot)

-----------------------------

Second load:
Bullet: Barnes 200gr PBX
Brass: Hornady (once fired)
Primer: Winchester Small Rifle
OAL: 2.240
Crimp: .475
Powder: Hodgdon Lil'gun

Charge 1: 37.5gr
Average: 2487fps (2746.2 ft-lbs)
Std Dev: 44.95 (5-shots)

Charge 2: 39.0gr
Average: 2614fps (3033.9 ft-lbs)
Std Dev: 36.63 (5-shot)

-----------------------------

It hard to tell how accurate they where, because when I got home I found that my scope has walk forward under recoil through the shooting session. Most of the groups where on the order of 2-2.5 inches at 100 yards. The 39.0gr PBX load was about a 1 inch group but yeah the scope was loose so I am not sure how much I can trust the groups I saw. I need to clean the scope tube and re-torque all the screws down again.

The big question is that last 39.0gr Lil'gun 200gr PBX load safe? I did not see any pressure signs and it cycled fine. Recoil was snappy but not outrageous and you would expect the lighter bullet to be snappier. I think with 450BM you can get yourself into a lot of trouble over stressing a 450BM AR bolt before your brass shows pressure signs given the low SAAMI pressure of 38,500 psi. I did not expect to see 450BM break 3000ft-lbs even with a light 200gr bullet. Quickloads predicted a velocity of 2418fps for that 39.0gr load. I got roughly 200fps more than Quickloads predicted. Usually Quickloads misses the other direction. What do you guys think?
