Been working up some loads for my 98 mauser/ Rhineland 16", 1:16 barrel using the above components. Using Hodgdon load data as a guide, starting loads are 35 gr and max load of 38.5 gr. The data is based on a 24" barrel and fps. Run from @2,000 to 2,250.
I worked up to 36.5 gr and thought I'd see what kind of velocity it was generating. Mind you, my bullet is seated out a ways, just off the lands a bit, the case mouths are as sized, not expanded and I'm using some elderly cci 400 primers. Figured it ought to be somewhat lower than the published stats. Imagine my surprise when the chrono showed a pretty consistent fps of 2,440 out of what should be a mid range load! Could that fast twist and seating depth have that great an impact?
No obvious pressure signs, but the recoil....oof!
