What Hornady uses to keep bullets secure in their ammo

Postby CJP1 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 6:23 pm

My buddy called me this afternoon. He said that he had called Hornady earlier in the day. He asked the fellow there how they kept the bullets from moving in their 450 Bushmaster ammo since there isn't any cannelure on the 250 gr. bullets. The fellow started to tell my buddy what they use but caught himself and changed the subject. Sounds like they don't want any one to know what they use along with their taper crimping to bond the bullet to the inside of the case. Any ideas what it might be?

I pulled a factory round this morning and heck if I can see anything visible on the bullet or in the case. This was from a box I picked up 3yrs ago, so maybe something's changed since.

Quite honestly, I doubt they do anything differently than we do. However, if they strategically let tidbits of information out that they have some secret process, it'll sell more ammunition.

found this snippet online, more for waterproofing but would guess it add a level of retention too.
Some Online Dude wrote:I do a fair amount of waterproofing of rounds. If you seal the primers and don't seal the bullets, you are only doing a patial load. Therefore, there is a difference between waterproof and sealing rounds. If you want to waterproof rounds, use Ortho tree pruning seal for the bullets and laquer for the primer. Ortho seal is an asphaltic tar that almost perfectly approximates the miliary seal. Take a Q-tip and get it moderately coated and then stick it inside the case mouth and roll it around the mouth, don't swirl it or you will develop thin spots. Wipe any off the case mouth that got slopped outside. Let this dry for about a day. When you drop powder and it doesn't stick to the asphalt, then it is ready. Now, load the rounds like you normally do and then let the rounds set for a day to allow the internal pressure equalize. Now, using simple laquer from any paint store, tinted if you like, take a toothpick and with the rounds in a holder with primers up, take a toothpick and draw the laquer around the primer pocket/primer contact. Let the laquer draw in for a few seconds and then with a paper towel on a board, swipe the excess off and then put them back in the holder and allow the sealant to dry. If it bubbles, then the internal pressure isn't equalized, stop and wait another day. The bubbled rounds can be shot as target rounds. Your rounds are now truely waterproofed. If you want to be sure, take a large glass cooking pan and lay about 20 to 30 rounds in it and boil a pot of water. When boiling, pour it in the pan and with a bright light off to the side shining through the pan, watch for about 20 seconds. When the rounds start to warm, if the seal is bad, the leak point will begin to bubble. If the rounds are pulled out with forcepts and dried, there will be no harm and they can be shot. If they don't bubble, then they are truely waterproof. If the process is followed, you won't need to test the rounds very often before you begin feeling confident. The only caution is that the asphaltic tar will increase the pressure slightly, so be careful if loading at the max end.

Wow... I can’t tell if that’s madness or pure genius! I’m inclined to vote for genius... did you come up with that yourself?

no lol. was a copy n paste off the net.

I know a couple of guys who used it on the 410 builds we did few years ago. That project used a .416 bullet in a plastic 410 hull, the hulls were slick and bullets pulled out easy so that was one solution. I ended up using a modified Lee crimp die with these Barnes and crimped in one of the bands.

Al, I hold you responsible: the vision of a 12ga. hull with an enormous boolit sticking out of it just flashed through my copper solvent-addled brain...know anyone who sells .730 caliber slugs? 8-)

Great google moo fly (auto corrected from “great googly moogly”)- normal 12ga slugs are what brought me to the 450 bushmaster (I got sick of the recoil and cost of the slugs, especially considering you caoreload those hornady sst’s)... what would something like this inspire?

Is there a caliber restriction for things over 0.50, or only in California?

:o well you asked!!!!! Few years back I had a gentleman make me a Beretta double with rifled Hastings barrels, then I made some brass hulls with the intent of using either cast slugs or jacketed slugs. Sorta been back burnered last couple years until I see Dennis at Fury making slugs on the side.........................so this winter she's coming to the front burner and going to run her thru her paces!!

Booyah!! Gun porn at its best...I think I need a moment alone with my laptop...

Here's an idea: Put a rifled barrel on one of the 12ga AR-style semi-autos out there...make the Big Daddy Thumper of all time...ooh..more warm feelings...
