Rings or AR15 style scope base for .450?

Postby adavis » Mon Sep 27, 2010 3:14 pm

Hello all, first post here, and I did a quick look so I hope I'm not being too repetitive. I was just wondering what the preferred method of mounting a scope on the .450 Bushmaster is. My 6.8 wears a Burris PEPR and I've had no issues with zero retention, but the recoil difference between the two is apples and oranges. I already tried an Eotech on the Bushy and didn't care for my groups past fifty yards, so even a low magnified optic seems like a better bet, at least at this stage of the game.

So for those who have tried both, or who believe fully in their base or rings, what should I entrust this hunting season to?

Welcome aboard! I believe there are a few guys on here running the PEPR mount.

I originally purchased the Burris Tactical 1" high mount rings but even mounted as far forward as I could get the scope, there wasn't enough eye relief for my scope. I'm using a 3-9 x 40 Bushnell 3200 muzzle loader scope and just changed to the PEPR mounts. Much better eye relief now for the scope I'm using. Was headed to the range today to re-zero the scope but got a stomach bug so that'll have to wait.

I tried several combinations including the AR type base and the YHM mini risers. I ended up with Millett extra high AR rings. They are solid steel so are plenty strong but don't have a lot of extra metal to add weight or bulk. I am using a Nikon Slughunter 1.6 - 5 scope and it holds up to the recoil well.

I bought the Rock Riverone piece Mount which is bascially like the PEPR and am very happy with it. Holds zero every time. Think it was 50 bucks or so.

Pepr is working great on mine. I can't imagine a better setup.

I am using Warne Tactical Ultra High rings and a Nikon Prostaff shotgun/muzzleloader scope to give me extra eye relief due to the added recoil..

I have warne rings on just about everything and so far had no issued with return to zero at all

PEPR or the SS mount is as simple and strong as I've found for a system that properly positions the scope for an AR. Stronger with fewer interacting parts.

Thanks guys! I went for the PEPR and mounted a Nikon 3x9 Omega scope on the .450. Hopefully I'll get some range time soon, deer seasons almost here!
